This is a wonderful and extremely rare American Reconstruction Era Black Folk Art oil painting on canvas, depicting a little girl who resembles Topsy, and her small brother as they check the chimney for Santa Claus. Old, tattered stockings are hanging over a fireplace. The little girl holds a candle, while her frightened brother looks on from behind her back. Signed Kittie Thew on verso and dated December 1890, only 30+ years since the end of slavery. A Very Early example of African American folk art, and a really rare gem for any collector to own. Signed Thew in bottom left corner. Approximately 22 x 18 inches. This painting, which is both African-American Folk Art, and Christmas themed, is a Holy Grail for collectors of this subject.
