ANTIQUE BREAD BOX VAN DYKE BAKERY DETROIT METAL BREAD BOX PATRIOTIC FLAG STARS. Up for sale is this fabulous antique bread box! It’s big, it’s beautiful and it’s old! It’s from the Van Dyke Bakery, which, after a little research, we determined was in Detroit, MI. We don’t see any references on the internet to the company after 1917. There are several ads and articles before then, but not after 1917. We’re not sure what this means. The box is all metal and wood as you can see in the pictures. The box is yellow with a shield of red, white and blue (now mostly black). It has two shields painted on the front that say. On the side it says. 245 Van Dyke Ave. With a little research we found that this is in Detroit as was the bakery. It’s a big boy and measures 28″ wide x 20.5″ deep x 20 high and it weighs a hefty 38 lbs! It has a flip top lid on it with cool old hinges on it. Inside it’s a lighter color and has some rustiness to it. The bottom is pretty rusty / grungy and the sides are pretty scraped and marked up. On the outside you can see the wood frames that make the box and then the metal panels that make up the sides of the bread box. The wood had metal corner protectors and those are rusty too. The paint is all alligatored, crackled, and patina-ed as you can see in the pictures. It’s been very used over the years and has lots of scrape, grunge and patina but it’s a great look!! This is a rare find! It has some fading, crackling paint, edgewear, paint loss, wood missing, paint chips, and patina.
