Charming and whimsical folk art painting by Hungarian artist, Kowalski, well-known for his Naive paintings of Village life in the 4 season. His paintings always tell a story and are in vibrant colors. Depicted in this winter scene is a family on its way to church, the church steeple visible in the distance. In the foreground is their cottage and outbuildings with rooftops laden with fresh snow against a background of a large tree with swaying branches. In front of the cottage a young child is accompanied by two dogs, with a rooster and chickens near by and birds overhead. As the family approaches the church they leave behind a trail of snowy footprints. The artist was born in Sopron, Hungary in 1926. He was a student of the Academy of Budapest and during the uprising in 1956 against Communism he escaped from Hungary to Vienna. Kowalski is internationally known and has exhibited in many Galleries throughout Europe, particularly in Munich, Vienna, Tokyo, and Harrods in London. His work has been on permanent exhibition at the Stewart Gallery branches and associated Galleries since around 1975. Signed in lower right hand corner. Original framed oil painting on canvas. Painting Measures: 20 x 16. Frame: A rustic dark wood, 27-1/2 x 23-1/2. Condition: Extremely good, no visible chips or stains, in my personal art collection for over 25 years.
