Born into slavery, Traylor spent the majority of his life after emancipation as a sharecropper. It was only after 1939, following his move to Montgomery. Alabama that Traylor began to draw. At the age of 85, he took up a pencil and a scrap of cardboard to document his recollections and observations. From 1939 to 1942, while working on the sidewalks of Montgomery, Traylor produced nearly 1,500 pieces of art. While Traylor received his first public exhibition in 1940, it wasnt until the late 1970s, thirty years after his death, that his work finally began to receive broader attention. Recent acceptance of Traylor as a significant figure of American folk and modern art has been founded on the efforts of Charles Shannon, as well as the evolving tastes of the art world. Shannon, who first encountered Traylor’s work in 1940, brought Traylor to the attention of the larger art world. Since then, public and scholarly perception of Bill Traylor’s life and work has been in constant evolution. First held up as an example of “primitive” or “outsider” art, Traylor now holds a central position in the fields of “self-taught” and modern art. EARLY AAFA FOLK ART ANTIQUE BLUE TABLE TOP PIE SAFE OLD ORIGINAL WHITE PAINT. Up for sale is this wonderful old tabletop pie safe. It’s old and adorable! It’s a nice white color with old screens. It’s got tons of character! It has an old screw that goes into a hole for a latch that keeps it closed. The knob appears to be black plastic and is probably newer than the pie safe. Inside there are 3 little wooden dowel shelves. It’s a wonderful white color with lots of patina, paint loss, edgewear, nicks, scrapes, and overall wear. There are many rusty and round nails in it as well as some brighter finish nails here and there around the trim of the screens. Overall, it has an aged patina to it with a little grunge here and there. It’s not perfect but then again, it is! It measures 27″ H x 13.75″ W x 13 D. It weighs 14 lbs. Folk Art Mose Tolliver Folk Art Watermelon Painting

It is signed in his typical backward S style. Mose Ts paintings are in many museum collections, including those of the American Folk Art Museum in New York, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D. The New Orleans Museum of Art and the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore. His former employer encouraged him to start painting, and Tolliver began to create images with house paint on pieces of plywood, Masonite, or old furniture. Unable to stand without crutches, he sat on his bed to paint, placing the board on his knees. Then in the 1980s Mose had a solo show at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, and was included in a folk art exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery, in Washington, D. Where he met with Nancy Reagan. His work is in the Collection of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art and numerous other public and private collections. He lived in poverty, but Mose also had a very fascinating life, including spending time painting at the White House at the request of the Reagans. During the late 1960’s, boredom and long hours of idle time spawned his creativity. Mose works with “pure house paint” on plywood; creating whimsical, haunting and sometimes erotic pictures of wonderfully balanced animals, humans, and flora. A “Quail Bird” may glide over a cotton field, or a spread-leg “Diana” may be straddled over An Excercise Rack Bicycle. Self portraits with crutches are a repeated image. Mose was dyslexic, which may have encouraged his artisitic efforts by limiting his reading and writing abilities. He would often turn his paintings upside-down and paint the picture of perhaps an animal and landscape positioned from various directions. Tolliver’s titles exhibit a fantastic imagination; “Smoke Charlies, ” “Scopper Bugs, “or Jick Jack Suzy Satisfying her own Self. Tolliver’s work has been exhibited at the Philadelphia College of Art, Montgomery Museum of Fine Art, and the Cocoran Gallery of Art. In 1993, a retrospective of his work was held at the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City. Mose Tolliver died on October 30, 2006 at a hospital in Montgomery, Alabama, from pneumonia. Antique 1800’s FOLK ART SCRAPBOOK Sketchbook WATERCOLOR PAINTING & DRAWING Book

Up for sale is this lovely antique art scrapbook belonging to one Robert Houston. The book is full of ink and pencil drawings as well as some watercolors. When counting one side of the paper as a page, there are approximately 57 pages with drawings and approximately 16 pages with watercolor paintings or drawings with some watercolor shading. About 4 or so pages have book/periodical engravings adhered to them, some are 18th century and some mid 19th century. A couple of pages have small Victorian embellished cards. Some pages have a spot of light staining, a small chip or tear, creased page corner, etc. A couple of pages are loose. There are a couple of pieces of artwork which are torn as well as a small amount of other ones which have some small chips or tears or soiling. Some of the pieces of art have some foxing. About 3 or so of the drawings have nice manuscript lettering with some drawn embellishments. About half of the drawings are in pencil and about half are in ink. A couple of the drawings are done with what looks like pastel. Some of the pieces of artwork are more skillfully done than others. Some appear to be a bit juvenile. The covers have some soiling and some heavy wear. The spine of the book looks like it is vellum, it has manuscript titling which says, Sketches and Drawings. The book measures approximately 12 inches by 9 inches. There are some interior cracks to the binding, but the binding of the book is still sound. The book most likely dates to around the mid 1800’s. All in all a really unique and interesting old scrapbook with several wonderful pieces of art. Fantastic vintage stencil painted bentwood chair, in the Hitchcock style, black painted with green/ yellow hand stencil. Unmarked, maker may be early Hitchcock or another similar. American, likely very early bentwood, late 1800’s – early 1900’s. Good strong condition with age and wear stenciling very worn. Lots of age and patina. Original rush seats are strong and intact, one seat has a approx 2 cut on seat, does not detract much and could be stabilized w glue. Rush seats are also painted with green/ yellow color. Very unusual pair of chairs with beautiful rustic quality. Size each approx 34″ tall to top of back, 18″ seat height. Seats are approx 17″ across seat, 16.5″ depth.
