Naive Surrealist Folk Art Oil Painting on Canvas ANN GRIFFIN-BERNSTORFF
Naive Surrealist Folk Art Oil Painting on Canvas – ANN GRIFFIN-BERNSTORFF. This is an original oil on canvas in a folk art, naive surrealist style by Ann Griffin-Bernstorff, signed to corner & dated 1988. With Gallery label for the Portal Gallery of Grafton St & Bond St, London W1. Titled’Gemini’, depicting two doll like women with infants beside an Elizabethan cradle. Framed size 27″ x 23″ (inches). Ann Griffin-Bernstorff is a native of County Limerick. Having trained as a horticulturist in France, she won the Taylor Art Scholarship in 1963, which saw her move to Paris to study at the Atelier Yves Brayer and Ecole des Beaux Arts. She then came to Dublin where she spent five years training and working as a picture restorer. In 1957 she married a Danish aristocrat, Count Gunnar Bernstorff, and they settled in Berkely Forest, an historic house near New Ross. Ann Griffin-Bernstorff’s art is encouraged by a number of influences. Having amassed a fine collection of antique dolls and costumes, her work conveys playful, almost storybook scenarios. She looks to Botticelli as well as early Dutch and Flemish artists. Even at a glance, the influence of the Old Masters is evident, but at the same time Anns work inspires an element of fun, drawn straight from her own imagination. The figures depicted in her paintings are plump and pale faced, their attire plucked from a stage costume wardrobe. Each scene is whimsical, often portraying brightly painted images of mythical creatures before a theatrical backdrop. Griffin-Bernstorf’s work is to be found in the following Irish public collections: the Office of Public Works, National Self Portrait Collection, University of Limerick and the Lambert Modern Art Collection, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Kilmainham, Dublin. She has exhibited widely in Dublin, Wexford and Derry and internationally in London, Chicago, New York and Miami. CONDITION loss of section of the maple veneer bottom right corner of the frame – as per images. The overall condition is as you would expect from an object of substantial age that has been displayed/handled/used, usually over the lifetimes of several owners. 21 L ANTIQUE PRIMITIVE WOODEN TRENCHER DOUGH BOX ORIGINAL RED AND BLUE PAINT. Up for sale is this wonderful, old, beautiful wooden trencher dough box. It is rectangular in shape with canted sides with little inlet wooden handles on each end to carry it by. It doesn’t have a lid and likely did not as this one is painted inside with a wonderful Primitive blue-grey, almost a robin’s egg blue in places, color. Sometimes the ones with the painted insides didn’t have lids, that’s why they painted the inside. The color is a beautiful Primitive, almost Ox Blood, red color with wonderful patina, age marks and character marks. Wow, we love the look and all the patina! It looks to have been made from old crates. We can see some crate writing on the side of the box but we can’t read it. It looks in part to say Knudsen’s but we’re not sure. We tried to show this in the last picture. Measures 21.5″ long (at the top) and 17.5″ long (at the bottom) x 9.5″ wide (at the top) and 8″ wide (at the bottom) x 9.25 high measured to the rim. It weighs about 5 lbs. It’s a wonderful, more petite size! This will make a great conversation piece. There’s some nicks, chips, surface imperfections, scrapes, discolorations, fading and edgewear as you can see in the pictures. These “imperfections” add character! It has many character scratches to the interior and spotting or differences in color from age and use. Look at the color, WOW! Inside it’s painted and there are wear marks where the paint has come off. It’s got patina from use on the inside too! The bottom of the box has a crack in it as you can see in the pictures. It’s very clean inside. We have tried to show all of this in the photos. Please look at the photos for a more accurate description and detail. The photos are part of our description so ask lots of questions! It will hold all kinds of seasonal decorations, pumpkins, greens, yarn, fruits, flowers, or even gifts! It is really a beautiful old bowl. The bowls shown in the pictures are not included. Thank you for looking at this item. Let us know if you have any questions. We are back and will be regularly putting up new items so check out our other items. We will do our best to answer your questions. We will handle them on a case-by-case basis. We will do the same. He is best known for his series of bunnies, butterflies and tropical birds, as well as his large-scale sculptures and restorations of forgotten historic homes. Slonem’s works can be found in the permanent collections of 250 museums around the world, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Whitney, the Miro Foundation and the New Orleans Museum of Art Since his first solo show at the Fischbach Gallery in 1977, Slonem’s work has been showcased internationally hundreds of times, most recently at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art and the State Russian Museum in St. In 2017 and 2018, he will be featured by the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the National Gallery in Bulgaria, and in countless galleries across the United States, Germany and Dubai. His flair and admiration for far-flung destinations has been a staple of his life since childhood. He would continue to seek out travel opportunities throughout his young-adult years, studying abroad in Nicaragua and Mexico; these eye-opening experiences imbued him with an appreciation for tropical landscapes that would influence his unique style. After graduating with a degree in painting and art history from Tulane University in New Orleans, Slonem spent several years in the early 1970s living in Manhattan. It wasn’t until Janet Fish offered him her studio for the summer of 1975 that Slonem was able to fully immerse himself in his work. His pieces began getting exhibited around New York, propelling his reputation and thrusting him into the city’s explosive contemporary arts scene. He received several prestigious grants, including from Montreal’s Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Cultural Counsel Foundation’s Artist Project, for which he painted an 80-foot mural of the World Trade Center in the late 1970s. He also received an introduction to the Marlborough Gallery, which would represent him for 18 years. As Slonem honed his aesthetic, his work began appearing in unique, contextual spaces. By 1995 he finished a massive six-by-86-foot mural of birds, which shoots across the walls of the Bryant Park Grill Restaurant in New York City. His charity work has resulted dozens of partnerships, including a wallpaper of his famous bunnies designed specifically with Lee Jofa for the Ronald McDonald House in Long Island. Slonem continues to draw great inspiration from history, forging palpable connections to the past through his art. His popular portraits of Abraham Lincoln reframe the historic figure as a pop-art icon, and he is currently working on a nine-foot-tall bronze sculpture of French explorer Robert De La Salle, to be displayed publicly in Louisiana. Yet Slonem’s most ambitious project has been his mission to save America’s often forgotten historic buildings. Realizing too many of the country’s architectural gems have fallen into disrepair, Slonem has found himself drawn to these national landmarks, inspired by the depth of their age and old-world beauty. Among his accomplishments are the restorations of Cordt’s Mansion in Kingston, New York; the Lakeside and Albania plantations of Louisiana; and the Scranton Armory and Charles Sumner Woolworth’s mansion in Scranton, Pennsylvania. His sixth and latest endeavor is Belle Terre, a storied property in South Kortright, New York. Numerous books and monographs have chronicled Slonem’s art, including Bunnies Glitterari Inc. 2014, Birds Glitterati Inc. 2017 and Hunt Slonem: An Art Rich and Strange Harry N. His studios and homes have been profiled in such books as When Art Meets Design (Assouline Publishing, 2014) and Pleasure Palaces: The Art and Homes of Hunt Slonem (powerHouse Books, 2007), among others. His latest will be Gatekeeper (Assouline Publishing), showcasing his reclamation of the Scranton Armory, and its transition from arms to art.
