This rare paint decorated, hand dovetailed, Bible box was made in Pennsylvania in the late 18th century. Constructed of pine with wrought iron strap hinges, it measures 18.25″ long, 13″ deep, and 6.5 tall. The salmon and red feather-grained paint is both colorful and well executed. The visible nails on the bottom appear to be hand wrought T-head shaped nails. Overall, the condition is very good for its age and use. There are two shrinkage separations on the lid due to drying over a 200 year period, and an old 2.5 triangular break-out caused by a trim nail (see photos). The paint has appropriate wear patterns but is especially colorful on the front. There is a 1 loss to the applied lower right base molding. The wrought iron strap hinges are excellent.
