On The Waterfront Provincetown, Cape Cod Artist, 16x20 Apres Blanche Lazzell
“On the Waterfront ” Provincetown Original Painting. Charming folkart painting by listed Cape Cod/Wellesley artist(see bio below). This is a part of his Apres Blanche Lazzell series where he is attempting, with personal modifications, to translate her classic woodblocks into acrylics. This piece was exhibited at the 4th annual plein air show at the Osterville Village Library. Interesting mixture of fauvist colors and geometric designs, created to follow a hint of her famous white line prints. From the artist’s imagination with a little help from Blanche inspiration, the painting depicts old Ptown wharfs. Gulls savoring the tuna, tatoo parlor, Chinese restaurant, sailor saloon and fish market. Acrylic on artist board, 16x20on canvas. Housed in an old wood frame. Signed “savage saloon”also signed, titled and dated 2022on verso. The Wellesley Collection. Biography:from the Archives of askARTRobert C. Savage, MD, was born in 1951 in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. His father, Peter, was a family physician in the anthracite coal mining area. Peter, and his wife, Olga, had five sons, four of whom became physicians. As a boy, Robert enjoyed sports and sketching cartoons and political caricatures. Robert attended Wesleyan University. There he first fell in love with art history from the teachings of legendary professor, Samuel M. Green, the nationally respected etcher, watercolorist and author of American Art: A Historical Survey. Upon graduation from Jefferson Medical College. During that period, he continued his life time love of art as a collector and researcher. The Savages personal art collection is comprised mostly of New England, impressionistic and realist artists from the early 20th century, primarily from Cape Ann and Cape Cod. This collection was published in the American Fine Art Magazine, and was discussed at the Boston International Fine Arts Exhibition. Upon retirement from medicine in 2016, Robert Savage started a new career as a local art historian curating two Facebook blogs, The Wellesley Collection Art Review and Friends of the Rockport Art Association and Museum. Writing with an emphasis on reviving the reputations of fabulous women artists from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, he is a frequent contributor to the Wellesley Weston Magazine. He lectures on similar topics in Wellesley, Boston and Cape Cod. Most recently, during the Covid pandemic winter, being entirely self-trained, he began to paint in oils and acrylics. His work concentrates on iconic images of Cape Cod and the Islands. Many of his works are in a folk art style inspired by the Cape tradition of the Cahoons and Elizabeth Mumford. He also admires the soulful work of Anne Packard and Blanche Lazzell of Provincetown in addition to the Edward Hopper Truro paintings. He enjoys the challenges of mixing geometric shapes and color experimentation. This item is in the category “Art\Paintings”. The seller is “thewellesleycollection” and is located in this country: US. (2) very nice original oil paintings by the Rockport artist Earle T. They have his original style and capture these “everyday” folks from around the Cape Ann area of Massachusetts. He was a well known member of his community and a member of the Rockport Art Association along with other art groups. (Mayo) Merchant and David S. Merchant was raised on Bass Avenue in East Gloucester. His mother worked as a bookkeeper while her mother tended the household. Merchant attended Gloucester High School (where he played the cornet in the school band and tutored fellow students in algebra) and graduated with the class of 192l. He went on to study at Boston University Law School, earning a law degree during the late 1920s. By 1928 he had joined a law practice with offices on Main Street in Gloucester. Merchant was active in local Masonic organizations, never married and lived in his family home on Bass Avenue for his entire life. By the early 1960s, Earle Merchant was focusing intently on painting, creating portraits, nude studies and landscapes. He made several visits to the artist colony of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico, often accompanied by artist friends whom he had met in the portrait sketch groups at the Rockport Art Association. Merchant attended the sketching sessions regularly. Begun in the late 1940s, they were intended to keep the art of portraiture alive on Cape Ann. By the late 1960s, Merchant was volunteering as monitor of the group, preparing the studio for students and arranging for models. In addition, he oversaw the Art Associations life sketch group which focused on painting nudes. Merchants involvements were not confined to Rockport as he also organized a life sketch group at the North Shore Arts Association in East Gloucester. Failing health forced him to relinquish these responsibilities in the late 1980s. Over a span of 20 years, Earle T. Merchant captured the likenesses of hundreds of Cape Ann residents from local characters such as Floyd the Clam Digger and Bill the Catnip Man, to district judges and their wives, businessmen and shop owners, retired fishermen, waitresses and fellow artists. Merchant meticulously labeled the back of each painting with the name of the sitter and the date the portrait was done. The inclusion of the date challenges viewers today to think about what was happening in the lives of the sitters at the time in which the portraits were done, what was going on here on Cape Ann, across the country and around the world. (this biography was borrowed from the Cape Ann Museum Gloucester, MA). The paintings are signed by the artist and most are inscribed by the artist on the back. Some of the paintings are on artist board and some are on Masonite(see photos). They are in good to very good original condition with only normal age and use wear (a few have some dried water staining and a few wrinkles), otherwise ready to be framed. (please view all photos for the best representation of quality and condition). Please look at all the photos to get a good idea of the true condition, the photos are part of the description. The items I list are primarily antique or vintage, and may have some minor flaws. I try to mention all damage or wear to the best of my ability; but I don’t hold these pieces to the same standard as I would if they were new. Good vintage condition means the piece is in the condition consistent with it’s age. If you have any doubts or questions, I will be happy to answer your inquiry. The item “(2) Orig. Earle T. Exceptional folk art oil (possibly acrylic) on board painting of a busy New England harbor by important Cape Cod folk artist Rosebee b. The following biography is from the U. State Department’s Art in Embassies. My paintings reflect not only the life I lived and stories my grandfather told me, but America as it was long ago: when times were fairly straightforward and simple and there was a sense of magic all around us. The legacy of characters I knew and those my grandfather introduced to me fill my canvases with a sense of joy. Both real and imagined characters find their home in my work. I love my country, so my use of the American flag is not some politically correct statement for me – I’ve used them from the start. What I hope is that when people view my work they feel the same joy I feel that I do as I create each piece. People ask me how I can come up with so many different scenes and topics and I reply that I’ve kept my eyes and ears open for many years, now, (I was born in 1932) so there’s lots to paint! ” “Rosebee was raised in a New England town by her grandparents. Her grandfather was a whaler, and many of her paintings are inspired by her recollection of stories he told to her as a child – about sails, and whales and mermaid tails. Her grandmother was a quilter, and quilt patterns are very much in evidence in nearly all of Rosebee’s paintings. Rosebee came to painting late in life. Self-taught, she was prompted to begin painting because she wanted to create a visual record of all of her happy childhood memories. In the process, she has gained both widespread popularity and recognition. In 1987, for example, she was named the Most Promising Marine Painter in the Country by the Mystic Seaport Maritime Gallery. Her paintings are in the permanent collection of a number of prominent art museums, including The Peabody Museum, Salem Massachusetts; The Springfield Museum of Fine Art, Springfield, Massachusetts; The Barnum Museum, Bridgeport, Connecticut; The Heritage Plantation, Sandwich, Massachusetts; and the Custom House, Salem, Massachusetts. This painting is an outstanding example of Rosebee’s style and one her most enduring subjects. It is titled “Summer Sailing” on a commemoration plaque and is dedicated in a note attached to the back of the frame. The painting is signed lower left, measures 16.75″ X 19.25″ (painting size), and is in good condition. Please see my other auctions for more fine paintings and prints.
