I personally met and spent time with Purvis and had mutual friends including Branka Joldas featured in his documentary. This work is in original condition and has never been hung. Measuring 38 1/2″ x 27″, painted on a piece of a wooden doorPurvis Young (February 4, 1943 April 20, 2010) was an American artist from the Overtown neighborhood of Miami, Florida. Young’s work, often a blend of collage and painting, utilizes found objects and the experience of African Americans in the south. Young gained recognition as a cult contemporary artist, with a collectors’ following including Jane Fonda, Damon Wayans, Jim Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, and others. In 2006 a feature documentary titled Purvis of Overtown was produced about his life and work. His work is found in the collections of the American Folk Art Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the High Museum of Art, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and others. For your consideration, a very fine antique portrait of a young woman in formal dress, circa 1880 Victorian era. The piece is unsigned and likely American; an intriguing looking work with an extremely well executed face, unusual ombré cloud-like background, and a slightly naive execution of the torso. The piece is oil on canvas and appears to have been restored, mounted on board, and reframed in Dallas in the 1940s. The painting is extremely clean with age related craquelure to the paint. Frame is in good condition with minimal gesso loss. Painting measures 18×24 inches, frame measures 21.5 x 27.5 inches with a depth of 2 inches. This oval portrait is in fair condition with a few small punctures to canvas and the gilt wood frame has losses to the gesso. The painting measures 21″ by 17″ and frame 27″ by 23″.
