Ocumicho Mask Mexican Wood carving Masks Folk Art OCUMICHO MASK: It is approximately 10 inches in length and 7 inches in width (with ears approximately 15.5 inches in width). Beautifully hand painted mask with salamanders on each side. Ocumicho is located in the mountainous forests of the Meseta Tarasca in the central part of the state of Michoacan. Ocumicho is an indigenous Purepecha community of 6000 people, organized as bienes comunales (common lands). Though Ocumicho’s primary economic base is forestry, subsistence agriculture and handcrafts, Ocumicho people have made clay sculptures, toys, erotic figures, banks and colorful masks since the regime of Bishop Quiroga in the 1530s. The Quiroga tradition continues today, and the village occupies an important place in regional barter and commercial markets. The ocumicho masks are renowned for they are unique animal designs, colorful and detailed handpainted. This unique piece have lots of detail. Each piece is unique because hand crafted individually. This guy has personality. He is beautifully carved and the detail in the painting of his feathers/body is amazing. Has glass eyes and measures about 17.5″ Long alone and just under 20″ on his stand. I believe his ears are leather and part of one ear is broken off as shown in photos. There is something between his nose and his eye that looks like another owl scratched him! Mexican Folk Art Wood Dowry Chest Baul Box Colonial Furniture Painted Birds 17

This is a rare piece and a beautiful example of Mexican / Spanish colonial folk art. It is a hand-made, and hand-painted, barrel top chest (baul) from the state of Guerrero. The chest is intricately painted on all sides with stylized deer and birds and f. Bold colors and a rich waxed finish. There are no hinges or hardware. The arched top just sits on the base, but you can easily add a hinge if you want one. Overall the piece measures 13″ tall by 17″ wide and 12 deep. Both boxes are the same size. Olinala is famous for its production of fine chests (bauls), gourds and furniture, which are intricately painted. This piece too is from the Rio Balsas river region in Southern Guerrero, home to the Nahua Indians that paint these pieces in the same style as the amate bark paintings. Coffers and chests (bauls) were often intended as dowry chests used to store valuables. A fabulous capsule of colonial culture and indigenous folk art.
