RARE Antique TIGER CIRCUS CARNIVAL Folk Art Rocking horse, WOOD Carved PAINTED
Apx 1940s Nearly 2 ft long.. Apx 23″x14″x7 , weighs apx 8 lbs , very solid.. I believe this was a collectors rocker for antique dolls. An amazing conversation piece!!!! We have just enjoyed up on a tall cabinet counter in our game room.. Has a lot of aging/ historical wear showing but nothing major.. All hand carved and painted I was told.. Was told this originally came from a circus toy collector, they owned several pieces for at least 10-20 yrs before offered. This was old when they obtained.. And I’m not sure how to tell.. There is some chipping and peeling in different places as you can see from the pictures and is been like that for as long as we’ve had it.. It feels like wood and it sounds like wood but please use the pictures for your own judgment. The head was a separate piece.. Screws on separately but has not been taken off in at least 25+ years that I know of, but you can tell as you can see in the pictures where it’s a separate piece from the body I guess for storage and transportation possibly… I have not tried to remove it it doesn’t seem like it will come off that easy I will leave that to the new owner if they would ever want to try… The item “RARE Antique TIGER CIRCUS CARNIVAL Folk Art Rocking horse, WOOD Carved PAINTED” is in sale since Friday, March 16, 2018. Bottom right corner as (Maud lewis) and on reverse titled. White Daisy Flowers dated. C 1964 and signed Maud Lewis. Image appears to be canvas or paper stock board that is an oil that is glued onto a wood masonite board measures approx 8 1/8″ x 11 1/8″ Professionally gallery framed in glass and matted. Quebec collector, Kastel gallery. Cand Listed Maud Lewis Biography. Maud Lewis used bright colours in her paintings, and subjects were often of flowers, oxen teams, horses, birds, deer, or cats. Many of her paintings are of outdoor scenes, like Cape Island boats bobbing on the water, horses pulling sleigh, skaters, portraits of dogs, cats, deer, birds, and cows. Her paintings were inspired by childhood memories of the landscape and people around Yarmouth and South Ohio as well as Digby locations such as Point Farm and Bayview. Born in South Ohio, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, Maud Lewis is renowned for her bright paintings of Maritime rural life. Having contracted polio, and suffering from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Lewis left school at the age of 14 and lived a confined but happy life at home. Following the death of her parents, Lewis moved to Marshalltown, Digby County, Nova Scotia to live with her aunt. It was there that she met her future husband, Everett Lewis, a fish peddler. They married in 1938 and moved into his small cabin. Due to her small stature and her arthritis, Maud was unable to do housework. However, she helped with the household by creating cards and paintings for income. With his encouragement, Lewis began to produce more paintings. Her work grew in popularity, and buyers began to come directly to her home to acquire her paintings. Maud Lewis would often paint similar paintings in one session each varying slightly different than the last. She often painted multiple same paintings due to the velocity of paint drying fast and would re paint same image until she felt it was perfect. Due to her arthritis and age often her works came out childish and sloppy so she would re-due them over again. She would often paint on local reused material from her area including drift wood sea shells and various wood booards and paper. Often she would then glue the paper works or canvas to a board to have framed hung to sell to tourists. Only in the last three or four years of Lewis’ life did her paintings begin to sell for seven to ten dollars. She achieved national attention as a result of an article in the Toronto-based Star Weekly in 1964, and in 1965, she was featured on CBC-TV’s. Two of Lewis’ paintings were ordered by the White House in the 1970s during Richard Nixons’s presidency. Unfortunately, her arthritis deprived her from completing many of the orders that resulted from the national exposure. Lewis passed away at the Digby General Hospital at the age of 67 in 1970. She has become one of Canadas most well-known and endearing folk artists. The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia has a large collection of her paintings, and installed her original house in the gallery as part of a permanent exhibition of her work. In 2016, a film was released on her life entitled Maudie. Heffel’s Top Results. Her work grew in popularity, and buyers began to come directly to her home to acquire her paintings. Despite her lack of formal training, Lewiss depictions of rural life, animals and landscapes, drawn from her everyday experiences, had an irresistible charm and vitality. She often used oil paints straight from the tube and rarely mixed her pigments, and her colourful work expressed the essence of Maritime life. Her work gained popularity to the point that she was featured in numerous newspapers, such as the Moncton Times, the Atlantic Advocate and the Star Weekly, and she also starred in a CBC-TV Telescope program in 1965. In 1967, her work was shown at the Centennial Exhibition of Primitive Art in New Brunswick at Beaverbrook House, St. Prominent collectors of her work include R. Stanfield, the former premier of Nova Scotia and Richard Nixon, the former President of the United States. Her paintings still hang in the White House and the Legislative Building of Nova Scotia.
