Hunt Slonem Art Work Aquarium Oil on Canvas, Nice theme, extremely rare folks
“Aquarium” excellent piece of art by this great artist Hunt Slonem. An early work in his career; work made on his road to success. It’s a beautiful piece which took lots of time and efforts! Probably many hours due to the complexity of the composition and lots of details involve. Signed: Yes; signed on the back as well as dated. Medium: Oil on Canvas in pristine condition. Questions and comments are welcome, but please, serious buyers only. Inspired by nature and his 60 pet birds, Hunt Slonem is renowned for his distinct neo-expressionist style. He is best known for his series of bunnies, butterflies and tropical birds, as well as his large-scale sculptures and restorations of forgotten historic homes. Slonem’s works can be found in the permanent collections of 250 museums around the world, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Whitney, the Miro Foundation and the New Orleans Museum of Art. Since his first solo show at the Fischbach Gallery in 1977, Slonem’s work has been showcased internationally hundreds of times, most recently at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art and the State Russian Museum in St. In 2017 and 2018, he will be featured by the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the National Gallery in Bulgaria, and in countless galleries across the United States, Germany and Dubai. His flair and admiration for far-flung destinations has been a staple of his life since childhood. He would continue to seek out travel opportunities throughout his young-adult years, studying abroad in Nicaragua and Mexico; these eye-opening experiences imbued him with an appreciation for tropical landscapes that would influence his unique style. After graduating with a degree in painting and art history from Tulane University in New Orleans, Slonem spent several years in the early 1970s living in Manhattan. It wasn’t until Janet Fish offered him her studio for the summer of 1975 that Slonem was able to fully immerse himself in his work. His pieces began getting exhibited around New York, propelling his reputation and thrusting him into the city’s explosive contemporary arts scene. He received several prestigious grants, including from Montreal’s Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Cultural Counsel Foundation’s Artist Project, for which he painted an 80-foot mural of the World Trade Center in the late 1970s. He also received an introduction to the Marlborough Gallery, which would represent him for 18 years. As Slonem honed his aesthetic, his work began appearing in unique, contextual spaces. By 1995 he finished a massive six-by-86-foot mural of birds, which shoots across the walls of the Bryant Park Grill Restaurant in New York City. His charity work has resulted dozens of partnerships, including a wallpaper of his famous bunnies designed specifically with Lee Jofa for the Ronald McDonald House in Long Island. Slonem continues to draw great inspiration from history, forging palpable connections to the past through his art. His popular portraits of Abraham Lincoln reframe the historic figure as a pop-art icon, and he is currently working on a nine-foot-tall bronze sculpture of French explorer Robert De La Salle, to be displayed publicly in Louisiana. Yet Slonem’s most ambitious project has been his mission to save America’s often forgotten historic buildings. Realizing too many of the country’s architectural gems have fallen into disrepair, Slonem has found himself drawn to these national landmarks, inspired by the depth of their age and old-world beauty. Among his accomplishments are the restorations of Cordt’s Mansion in Kingston, New York; the Lakeside and Albania plantations of Louisiana; and the Scranton Armory and Charles Sumner Woolworth’s mansion in Scranton, Pennsylvania. His sixth and latest endeavor is Belle Terre, a storied property in South Kortright, New York. Numerous books and monographs have chronicled Slonem’s art, including Bunnies Glitterari Inc. 2014, Birds Glitterati Inc. 2017 and Hunt Slonem: An Art Rich and Strange Harry N. His studios and homes have been profiled in such books as When Art Meets Design (Assouline Publishing, 2014) and Pleasure Palaces: The Art and Homes of Hunt Slonem (powerHouse Books, 2007), among others. His latest will be Gatekeeper (Assouline Publishing), showcasing his reclamation of the Scranton Armory, and its transition from arms to art. Whitfield an American Classic. A very rare African American Folk Art-Outsider Art Masterpiece by the elusive painter in her signature iconic style medium, acrylic/watercolor on canvas board. Appropriately titled,’Day is Done’, the painting is accompanied with a fascinating narrative describing the painting subject and hand written and signed by the artist herself. Although’Day is Done’ has been highly sought after for decades by museums and collectors, the painting is being offered here for sale for the very first time. Mary Whitfield has signed’Day Is Done’ twice, on the front of the painting with her distinctive, MW, and with her full signature found on the reverse of the canvas. Dimensions 16″ x 20″. Mary Whitfield was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1947 when her mother was nineteen. Her father walked out on their wedding day so Mary spent the first years of her life in the home of her maternal grandparents. It was a loving environment with two aunts who each had eight children. The home was filled with family stories and traditions. Marys grandmother was an active soldier in the Civil Rights struggle. As a child, Mary developed a vivid imagination and loved to spend hours entertaining her younger sister and cousins, by telling stories that she illustrated with drawings. When Mary was seven, her mother remarried a man from New York and moved there with her sister. She and her sister would spend every summer in Alabama. In Great Neck, Mary and her sister were pioneers in integration, being the only black members of the student body. During the early years of her marriage, Mary began having the compulsion to create things after her children were put to bed. She would often find old plywood and housepaint in her garage and would paint paintings. This compulsion became a continuation of her love for storytelling that filled her lonely nights. Bringing to visual life a variety of stories became her escape from the sadness in her marriage. Over time, she found that creating art was a way of coping with her depression. Whitfield focuses her rich paintings on the historical and modern plight of African-Americans. The powerful works contain little detail; the figures have no facial features. Instead, the drama of their gestures or body language conveys the feeling of the painting. The American Museum of Folk Art wrote that through her spiritually powerful images and writings Mary Frances Whitfield re-interprets and documents stories told to her as a child. Her deceptively simple yet touching portrayals of the disquieting and heroic history of African Americans convey injustice, suffering, love and optimism. Day Is Done’ is a masterpiece, a virtual tour de force. The paintings of Mary F. Whitfield are found in the renown museums and in private collections. This is a beautiful, rare Amish 3d hand-carved painting by Sam Zook, of the Kinzers, Pennsylvania, Zook family. Sam Zook worked in tandem with Abner Zook before Abner’s death, releasing at least one work by the two of them together. I tried to capture the depth of the carved figures through the photos. This is wood-carved in deep relief. It is quite heavy, I’m estimating around 15 lbs. The size of the frame is 17 5/8″ square, with the inner image measuring at 13 1/8″ square. The depth of the frame, not including the carving that extends beyond the frame, is 2 1/8. Old wall hanging game, fowl, or herb drying rack. Hand made and floral hand painted wood board with a scalloped crown and 5 original wrought iron hooks. The hand painted floral design blends nicely with Norwegian Rosemaled folk art, we used it to hang hand knit Norwegian mittens, Scandinavian acanthus carved meerschaum pipes and wood chain wedding spoons from Norway. The rack has an interesting free-flowing painted decoration in blue, orange, green, white, and yellow, similar to Norway Rosemaling and Swedish Kurbitz painting, or any number of European folk painting traditions such as Romanian. Condition as pictured, structurally sound. Note a wood knot or a very old filled hole between the far left 2nd and 3rd hook. Unsure of exact age, probably 19th century, possibly older. Measures 36 inches long x 5 5/16 inches high x 2 1/2 inches deep. Thank you for looking, questions are welcome. All items are from a smoke and pet free home. We take pride in our many clearly focused photographs. Please study all pictures as they are part of the description. This is a rare, erotic, novelty picture clock with an automation. The piece is unassuming, winter city scape, but if a window is lifted, a bobbing woman can be seen with a man. The picture contains 2 Swiss jeweled watch movements. One of the movements runs the street clock and the other runs the erotic automation. The piece is a little offensive, but more than anything its funny! There frame has some dings, but theyre not noticeable. Both movements were running at the time of listing and the automaton was performing as intended. Its really a neat and rare piece. I dont think youll find another! Accuracy is rarely tested and maintenance records are unknown unless otherwise specified. You can message or call. VERY Rare 19th Century Folk Art Boy With Dog William Bartoll (1840-1850)
Described as rare for two reasons. First, despite being considered an excellent 19th century artist, William Bartoll, with originals in many prominent collections, appears to have very few reproductions of his work. Second, this particular painting, “Boy With Dog” has rarely been reproduced/reprinted, most likely because the Henry Ford Museum, owner of the original, has not allowed it. This is a printed reproduction of unknown age. Both the painting and its frame (a tasteful dark green) are in very good condition. Handwritten on the back: Artist Unknown: Portrait of Boy With Dog. From the Henry Ford Collection, Dearborn, Michigan Dimensions – Frame (27H x 21W); Painting (23H x 17W) But the artist is known.
