For your consideration is this antique framed portrait of President Abraham Lincoln. It is an oil on canvas painting that has been laid down on a plywood panel. It comes in a fancy, gold, wood and gesso frame that has been boxed in with a black painted wood frame. Overall the frame measures 35×31″ while the actual image measures 24×20″. The painting is very dark but appears to be unsigned. This is a slightly whimsical, almost folky version of Lincoln that you don’t normally see in an old painting. I suppose mostly out of reverence and respect for a martyred president, as well as the severity of the issues he dealt with, antique images portray him as formal and serious. I’ve lived in Springfield, IL my whole life and have never seen an antique Lincoln quite like this one. My guess is it was painted during what can best be described as the heyday for Lincoln imagery, sometime between his death in 1865 and the 100th anniversary of his birth in 1908. At some point the painting was obviously not in very good condition as it is now laid down on a plywood panel and shows old restoration throughout. There are highs and lows in the surface, crackling, etc. That being said, the surface is stable and solid to the touch with no loose or flaking paint. It still presents itself quite well and someone thought enough of it at one time to undertake a rather extensive restoration effort with, what I think turned out to be quite successful. The combination of the old inner frame, the outer “boxing” and the plywood panel are striking elements that have been together for quite some time. The dirt and oxidation are all uniform and just the way you would like to fine them. These are not things that have been recently combined. With the amount of dust that’s still on it, it has been hanging somewhere for quite awhile. And, regarding “somewhere”, I bought it from a shop owner who buys estates, storage units, etc. In New York City. That’s the extent of it’s past that I know for sure. I’m not suggesting that at all. It is an interesting, unique old painting, of unknown origin that shows extensive restoration. If by chance it should change your life, there’s no extra charge for that. It is being offered estate fresh so help yourself. Please study the photos and ask any questions you may have.
