Moses Tolliver (1918 to 2006) who painted under the name Mose T, with a backward s, is considered one of the founding figures of what became known as Outsider Art. He grew up in rural Alabama and taught himself to paint, because he didnt learn to read until later in life. He crushed his foot while working in a warehouse, and began to paint for a living even before he was discovered by art critics and galleries. He usually painted in house paint on plywood or discarded boards, whimsical and sometimes erotic pictures of animals, humans, and flora, watermelons and birds. His work has been displayed at the White House, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and many other museums and galleries.
