Provenance:: Columbus Museum, Columbus Georgia. This painting features a woman standing or posing in a brown dress with green polka dots. She looks straight at the viewer with a look of pride and confidence on her face. A wonderful original work by one of the preeminent Outsider artists ever born in America. Signed by the artist in pencil on bottom. Framed in a simple vintage antiqued gold picture frame. Framed – 17 x 13 1/4. 16 x 12 (approximately). Jimmie Sudduth (1910 – 2007). One of Sudduth’s earliest memories is of painting a picture at the age of three. The son of an Indian “medicine lady, ” he recalls painting with a mud and honey mixture on the surface of a freshly cut tree stump while he and his mother were in the woods looking for medicine plants. His mother saw this as a good “sign” and encouraged him thereafter to paint. Finger-painting with mud-earth ochres and “sweet water” became a continual part of his life. He also experimented with adding color to his work by using wild berries, grasses and paint rocks. He married an Indian girl at an early age and they had one daughter. After his first wife’s death, Sudduth married Ethel Palmore, his wife of more than thirty years, until her death in 1992. Together they adopted a young boy, Rance Maddov, who was an artist and later drowned. Sudduth spent most of his life working on rural farms and grinding corn meal in the Fayette County area. Around 1950 Sudduth moved to the town of Fayette and was an active handyman and gardener for many of the townspeople. He was always eager to make someone a painting and to share a tune on his harmonica so he quickly became a local celebrity. In 1972, the first public exhibition of his work was organized by Jack Black, Sudduth’s life-long friend at the Fayette Art Museum. Sudduth was selected as one of two artists to represent Alabama and traveled to the Smithsonian Institution for the Bicentennial Festival of American Folk life in 1976. The Birmingham Museum of Art exhibited his paintings in 1978 and two years later, he was featured on national television on the Today Show. I’ve been all the way to New York City and my pictures are all over this world! Sudduth lives in a small house near the railroad track with his new dog, Toto. The old “Toto” died in 1995. He greets a steady stream of visitors who find their way there from throughout the world to watch Sudduth paint and to hear him wail out the blues on his harmonica. Jimmie Lee Sudduth died on September 2, 2007 in his hometown of Fayette, Alabama. The item “Alabama Black Folk Art Painting By Outsider Artist Jimmie Lee Sudduth. This painting features a man and his pet riding a type of figurative animal car of some sort. The car seems to be formed of dog or pig type animals with heads on both the front and rear. He uses the feet as a steering wheel to drive the car. A splendid folk art scene by a well loved Georgia Outsider self taught artist. It is mixed media of probably acrylic on paper. Signed and dated April 29 2004. Just three years before his passing in 2007. Framed in a contemporary frame under glass. Framed – 18 x 22. Sight – 15 1/2 x 19 1/2. Toby Ivey was born in Thompson, Georgia in 1944. He was a self-ordained minister living and working in Atlanta. Self-taught artist Toby Ivey utilizes a symbolic language composed of “visions on paper, ” to create paintings that possess both a childlike naivete and a strong sense of wisdom. His paintings address the good and evil inherent in all humanity and incorporate images that the artist refers to as protective spirits. The mystery of Toby Ivey’s work lies in the fact that the language of his paintings is obviously deliberate – recognizable symbols are repeated throughout his work – but their meanings are less clear. The colorful paintings conjure up thoughts of biblical scenes and storybook illustrations, and they share a symbolic language that parallels some of the most sought-after imagery in African-American self-taught art. Toby Ivey passed away in 2007. The item “Original Outsider Painting By Georgia Black Folk Art Artist Toby Ivey. Signed” is in sale since Wednesday, May 16, 2018. The framed image illustrates how it should be floated in a frame with a mat backing exposing all edges of the art. Original Art By Listed (Askart) Georgia Artist Steven Chandler. Signed: Chandler’18, also signed/ titled on back. Medium: Artist paint, Original Permanent Homemade Georgia Red Mud Paint on matboard. Size: 9 x 12 inches (roughly). Provenance: Painting will include an artist personalized receipt. I did this one this past summer, it was hot. I used my Dad’s old. 357 six shooter as a model for this one. I also like Jewish Folk Art, Russian , Mexican and well Folk Art made by many ethnicity’s and cultures. My figures are generally race free though, just because they might be dark, doesn’t mean anything to me other than a shade of light, shady figures, race-free.. I think there is a big difference between a racist conversation and a racial conversation. People used to message me before I started posting photos of myself, wondering what color I was. They never asked outright, but they beat around the bush, ridiculous.. One time somebody asked me if I was the “Real Steven Chandler” I told them I sure hope so, I’m wearing his underwear. To many, it seemed who I was, was more important than the image they were interested in. I have found over the years that many look at the artist before they look at the art. Do they look at the chef, before they eat the food? The author before reading the book? The director before the movie? I started catching snakes around six or seven years old. I read every book I could on them. I wanted to be a herpetologist. Sometime back then I went deaf for a while and drew pictures obsessively, nobody knew I was nearly deaf, they thought I was just not listening. Also back then if you drew obsessively, there must have been something wrong with you, so I couldn’t even be an artist, I had to get tested for autism and everything else. Because I couldn’t hear, I fell behind in math and other studies that you need to go into herpetology. Again, though, nobody knew I was nearly deaf, so I got yelled at for not listening and drawing all the time and running around chasing after rattlesnakes. Now days I would have been hailed as some child prodigy or something, but no, not in the 1970’s, back then you were just crazy. So I grew up making art and catching snakes. I went on to go to college and earned a degree in art. They told me in college I was primitive and could not teach me much, I already was there. So I get a degree, but was to primal for the hoity toity contemporary art world and too educated for the self-taught folk outsider whatever world-I just couldn’t win… The hell with them all, I made my own damn art world. This is my last painting of 2018. There is roughly 4000 of my works out there in the world now. I live in rural Georgia. Georgia Red Mud Painter Blog. Antique 19thC FOLK ART BOX BLACK PAINT AAFA Document/ Pantry/ Candle/ Primitive
Antique 19thC FOLK ART BOX BLACK PAINT AAFA Document/ Pantry/ Candle/ Primitive. Folky mid 19th century homemade box in dry black paint. Applied wood strips continue on all walls of the box as well as rondelle and conical brass tack decoration. Strike plate removed at some point, likely when the key was lost (see pic 18). Some errant paint on lid in red and green, looks period and may be a clue to what the box was used for dried sealing wax? Back edge of lid broke off long ago. I’m not one who believes damage “adds character” in all cases but at least its old loss that had time to patinate and is not glaring (see pic 7). Great condition over all with scattered paint loss, surface wear. Approx 10.75″L x 6.75″W x 5 tall. See pics for additional details and any questions please ask.
