YELLOW HAIRED WOMAN and BIRDFISH image…. Painted on a damaged see last two photos! Large thin recycled fiberboard piece. Measures a big 20 x 32. Board is separating on bottom right. Might be a challenge to frame. Small, Raised 3-d in areas mostly on top, maybe was glue Micheal painted over?? . Painted on a recycled board, which is typical for a Banks’ piece… Again separation on the layers of thin wood, however, displays VERY WELL! This piece exemplifies the emotion and talents of Mr. Vibrant colors, which my camera did NOT capture well! BIO: Michael has won many honors with his work which has been exhibited in New York, Denver, and Atlanta. The Hurn Museum in Savannah, Georgia presented a One-Man exhibition of his work in 2005 and has a number of his works in their permanent collection. Articles featuring his work have appeared in Southern Living magazine (August 2006) and Better Homes and Gardens (August 2006). A review of his Hurn exhibition in the Savannah Morning News stated, “Michael Banks: Outsider Artist” offers Savannah’s most rewarding and penetrating solo show in recent memory. Mexican Folk Art Wood Dowry Chest Baul Box Colonial Furniture Painted Birds 17

This is a rare piece and a beautiful example of Mexican / Spanish colonial folk art. It is a hand-made, and hand-painted, barrel top chest (baul) from the state of Guerrero. The chest is intricately painted on all sides with stylized deer and birds and f. Bold colors and a rich waxed finish. There are no hinges or hardware. The arched top just sits on the base, but you can easily add a hinge if you want one. Overall the piece measures 13″ tall by 17″ wide and 12 deep. Both boxes are the same size. Olinala is famous for its production of fine chests (bauls), gourds and furniture, which are intricately painted. This piece too is from the Rio Balsas river region in Southern Guerrero, home to the Nahua Indians that paint these pieces in the same style as the amate bark paintings. Coffers and chests (bauls) were often intended as dowry chests used to store valuables. A fabulous capsule of colonial culture and indigenous folk art. Estate fresh wonderful antique folk art pottery wall pocket. Very old paint, small chip back of pocket, right bird has tail feather broken off, painted over, dribbles, splashes, old white, blue, paint, small split on left bird’s right chest. Piece is very delicate. Certainly not new so please take advantage of zoom or enlarge feature and study all photos thoroughly. Approx 9″ X 3 3/4″ deep X 9 tall.
