C1830 Watercolor Watch Paper Floral Love Birds Martha Honeywell. This is a very well done but a naive watercolor painting of love birds in a basket, surrounded by colorful flowers and leaves bordered by pointed/geared decoration. This artwork in on wove paper and dates to circa 1830 or so and measures about 2 inches in diameter. Colors are strong but with expected minor loss to the borders. Her broadsides and newspaper ads frequently mentioned watch papers. ” In addition, she often used “pin pricks to imitate stipple engravings. This current offering shows them clearly, especially on the verso. I looked very hard to see if I could locate any of her initials on this work, but I could not. The only period inking I see are the numbers “312” on the mid-center reverse. Love birds and bicolored flower petals are her usual theme. Although not signed, this artwork can stand on its own. The artwork is on fragile paper. I’ve placed it into an archival sleeve and placed it in-between plexiglass, so both sides can be viewed. It can be displayed as it is. A beautiful country dusk scene of a stone cottage, a birdhouse, blueberries, plum trees, a full moon, dogwood flowers, a girl swinging on a tree wood swing with an eventail fan, doves, sunbeams, and a pond with a swan. Some of the painting seen is in the shape of a cross. Painting is crystal clear in person. Condition is great and clean overall. Painting size is 16 by 20 inches. Finish is highly glossed with a gloss polyurethane. Painting was painted on sides, painted back and varnished overall, and left to dry for a long while. Painting is initialed on front twice, and fully signed, titled and dated on the back. Painting was professionally adhered to background wood painted border and will NOT detach. Painting is 2 pieces of wood which includes a border. Both pieces of wood are professionally adhered. Both pieces of wood are professionally adhered and they shall never separate. As the artist, I made certain the painting was made to last for centuries, if properly cared for. Both pieces of wood are strongly professionally adhered and will NOT detach. Overall size with frame is approximately 16 by 20 inches. Painting has soft gold mica powder accent throughout in the varnish, which gives an ethereal glow and appearance. Please IGNORE camera flash glare as this has a heavy gloss varnish. The painting is crystal clear in person and painted with exquisite detailing. With on arm held out a little yellow bird sits upon her finger while a small white dog sits on the floor low right. The arching gold bird cage rests off the the right showing a red parrot inside. The small girl shows a lovely painted face with rosy cheeks and a nice cool blue ribbon in her hair in contrast to her warm dress. This work is illegibly signed in the low left corner in red and resembles the work of Mexican artist Agapito Labios.
