Charming and whimsical folk art painting by Hungarian artist, Kowalski, well-known for his Naive paintings of Village life in the 4 season. His paintings always tell a story and are in vibrant colors. Depicted in this winter scene is a family on its way to church, the church steeple visible in the distance. In the foreground is their cottage and outbuildings with rooftops laden with fresh snow against a background of a large tree with swaying branches. In front of the cottage a young child is accompanied by two dogs, with a rooster and chickens near by and birds overhead. As the family approaches the church they leave behind a trail of snowy footprints. The artist was born in Sopron, Hungary in 1926. He was a student of the Academy of Budapest and during the uprising in 1956 against Communism he escaped from Hungary to Vienna. Kowalski is internationally known and has exhibited in many Galleries throughout Europe, particularly in Munich, Vienna, Tokyo, and Harrods in London. His work has been on permanent exhibition at the Stewart Gallery branches and associated Galleries since around 1975. Signed in lower right hand corner. Original framed oil painting on canvas. Painting Measures: 20 x 16. Frame: A rustic dark wood, 27-1/2 x 23-1/2. Condition: Extremely good, no visible chips or stains, in my personal art collection for over 25 years. I will be glad to answer any questions. The item “Vintage, Folk Art, Naive Painting, Kowalski, Hungarian Artist” is in sale since Friday, October 5, 2018. MEDIA: Original mixed medium on acid free card stock paper. Scared of my own image, scared of my own immaturity. Scared of my own ceiling, scared I’ll die of uncertainty. Fear might be the death of me, fear leads to anxiety. Don’t know what’s inside of me. Don’t forget about me. Even when I doubt you. I’m no good without you, no, no. Temperature is dropping, temperature is dropping. I’m not sure if I can see this ever stopping. Shaking hands with the dark parts of my thoughts, no. You are all that I’ve got, no. I’m no good without you, no, no, no, no, no. Gnawing on the bishops, claw our way up their system. Repeating simple phrases, someone holy insisted. I want the markings made on my skin. To mean something to me again. Hope you haven’t left without me. Hope you haven’t left without me, please. Up for sale here is an original, one of a kind gouache and watercolor painting by well collected contemporary Polish painter and illustrator Jozef Wilkon (born 1930). This fine painting dates most likely from between 1973 and 1974 but it could be earlier. The artist’s title for this work is “Girl in Flower Garden, Night”. The painting only measures 6 1/2 inches high by. 4 3/8 inches across. The total size with the frame comes to 15 inches by 12 1/2 inches. The painting is signed by the artist in the bottom center of the painting. This painting was also exhibited at the very popular Chicago area Museum, The Polish Museum of America, on April 4, 1976 and still retains the exhibition label on the back. The work was framed in the Chicago area at Schwartz Picture Frame Co in 1974 and has a framer’s label on the back as well. The painting is in very good condition with bright colors and no cracking or flaking to the paint. The backing paper has tears but we didn’t want to remove it since the labels were on there and the piece is still sealed quite well. Jozef Wilkon has illustrated many books over his lifetime and he is quite a prolific artist but not a whole lot of his original paintings are floating around out there. We will not alter the value of an item for export purposes. The item “OLD Polish Listed Artist Fine Folk Art PAINTING Artwork EXHIBITED at a MUSEUM $$” is in sale since Tuesday, August 13, 2019. Original African American Painting by Black Folk Artist Moses Tolliver
This is a beautiful original by Moses Tolliver, please note the nail holes in the wood. I bought this piece from the Washington Design Center, which was located in SW Washington DC. Tolliver was born one of 12 children to sharecroppers Ike and Laney Tolliver in the Pike Road community, near Montgomery, Alabama. His exact year of birth is unknown, though it is known he was born on the Fourth of July. He attended school only until the third grade due to a self-described lack of interest in education. In the 1930s, the family moved to Montgomery, Alabama where he helped support his parents and their large family by doing odd jobs. In the early 1940s he married his childhood friend, Willie Mae Thomas, and had 13 children, 11 of whom survived to adulthood. During the late 1960s, after a severe injury (his legs were crushed when a load of marble shifted and fell from a forklift as he was sweeping in the furniture factory), he turned to painting to combat boredom, pain and long hours of idle time. He would often turn his paintings upside-down and paint the picture of perhaps an animal and landscape positioned from various directions. Tolliver’s titles are wildly divergent; e. “Smoke Charlies”, “Scopper Bugs” or “Jick Jack Suzy Satisfying her own Self”. Tolliver died from pneumonia at age 82 on October 30, 2006, in Montgomery, Alabama. Tolliver signed his work, “MoseT” with a backward “s”. He regularly worked with “pure house paint” on plywood, creating whimsical and sometimes erotic pictures of animals, humans, and flora. His familiar themes also included watermelons and birds. Tolliver’s painting style is referred to as flat, full frontal or straight profile with a muted palette. A “Quail Bird” may glide over a cotton field, or a spread-leg “Diana” or “Moose Lady” may be straddled over an exercise bicycle rack. Never able to walk well following his injury, he painted many self portraits with crutches or would sit on his bed and balance whatever surface he was painting on, on his knees. Tolliver’s themes were drawn from his own experiences. Tolliver’s work has been exhibited in the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington DC, and at the Philadelphia College of Art, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. The item “Original African American Painting by Black Folk Artist Moses Tolliver” is in sale since Tuesday, July 23, 2019. This item is in the category “Art\Paintings”. The seller is “cowboy280″ and is located in Silver Spring, Maryland. This item can be shipped to United States.
