Antique 19th century, c1860s, original oil painting of an eye catching folk art townscape at dusk. Depicts a riverside mill town complete with buildings, Windmill and old stone bridge arching over a gently cascading waterfall. Presumably a New England scene. Medium is oil on canvas done in a folk art style. Framed in its original lemon gold gesso and wood frame and ready to hang. Very intriguing and worthy of further research. Provenance comes from a Keene, New Hampshire area estate. In Good overall condition. Exhibits gentle cracking and soiling. No holes, rips, tears or indents. Frame shows gentle chipping and loss to the gesso at the corners. Eye catching and appealing. Measures 15 1/4″ x 12 1/4″ and 19 1/4″ x 16 1/4″ with the frame. All reasonable offers considered. The painting probably dates to the mid 19th century and is painted either a cut down artist board or on canvas and then laid down on board. This offering is for an antique mid 19th Century Hand Painted Chair Crest Rail. The wooden crest rail has a wonderful floral paint decoration that includes three tulips at the left side. It looks like the current surface, while quite old, is over an earlier green paint but it has achieved a very nice surface and patina in it’s own right. The length of the rail is app. 15.75 and the height is app. 3.75 The condition is excellent with minor wear to the surface but no cracks, breaks or repairs. The damage to this painting would make an excellent restoration project. Four very large tears to the canvas and heavy discoloration. Vertical scratches to the paint at the left side. Mid 19th Century Oil – The Piper And His Apprentice. A fine example of naive English school painting from the mid 19th Century. The scene shows an elderly man playing bagpipes as a young boy holds up a hat, signalling for coins to be thrown in. The painting is unsigned and presented in a 29th Century gilt effect frame with oversize scrolling foliate molding. The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. The frame is in fine condition. Size: 20 x 16cm (7.9″ x 6.3″). Includes a Certificate of Authenticity.
