This selection is a framed Giclee reproduction on stretched canvas of Pay Day, a 2016 painting by Navasota, Texas folk artist Leon Collins. The canvas is 16 by 20 by 1 unframed and 21 by 25 framed. It is framed in a beautiful mahogany veneer with bronze accents, ready to hang. It is one of a limited series of Collins paintings that celebrate the heyday of African culture by creating figures to resemble traditional African sculpture. Others in this series include The Conversation (2016, see picture #5) and Banana Boat (2016, see picture #6). The original painting is acrylic on canvas, also16 by 20, and resides in a private collection in Navasota, Texas. An African American, Leon Collins (1951-, see picture #7) is Navasotas local legend. While he has housed his Color of Life Gallery in several antique stores along East Washington Street, he is known for painting and displaying his treasures on the sidewalk in full view of passersby. According to fellow Navasota artist and sculptor Russell Cushman, Collins is the most successful artist in the Brazos Valley, and perhaps the most prolific artist that Texas has produced. Leon Collins is best known for portraying his many childhood memories, but his work includes a number of distinct phases and styles. Collins is an amazingly productive artist, painting one or more works a day. He sells them as fast as he can paint them, so original works of his are hard to find. His life and works have been featured in Images of America: Navasota by Robin and Joy Montgomery (2012), Texas Farm and Home Magazine (September, 2018), South Central Texas Live Magazine (February, 2009), the Navasota CurrentRussell Cushmans blog, The Lufkin News, and the Navasota Examiner (December 3, 2008). His paintings have been shown in galleries from Bryan, Fort Worth, and Dallas, Texas to New York, Rhode Island and Connecticut. Local showings have included the Redbud Gallery of Houston, the Main Street Fort Worth Arts Festival, and Rice University.
