Gorgeous antique hand-painted box with hinged lid, bracket feet, scalloped front apron, hand-wrought iron hardware, and a glorious chippy paint surface, blue with stylized leaf flourishes and a (very worn) yellow bird. The paint is old, and there appears to be an even older green paint beneath. Possibly with Pennsylvania German immigrants. The corner joints are rabbet joints. The hinges are strap hinges. CONDITION NOTES: Some notable paint loss, chippy surface, please view photos. There appears to be an even older green paint under the blue. Iron hardware is rusty and the hasp for some reason has been curled up. Some wood shrinkage, separating but holding together. Size: 13″ x 9-5/8″ x 7.25. EARLY AAFA FOLK ART ANTIQUE BLUE TABLE TOP PIE SAFE OLD ORIGINAL PAINT. Up for sale is this wonderful old tabletop pie safe. It’s old and adorable! It’s a nice Primitive blue color with old, rusty screens. It’s got tons of character! It has an old wire metal latch that hooks from the door in to an little loop on the side and holds the door shut. It has a nicely scalloped top trim piece and inside there is one shelf. The inside is not painted except for a few paint drips. There’s even a little knothole / mouse hole on the back. They must have been good pies! The back was made from old crates! It’s a wondeful blue color with lots of patina, paint loss, edgewear, nicks, scrapes and overall wear. The blue paint has been lightly sealed or waxed as you can see in the pictures. We anticipate they were trying to preserve the color and the finish. It has a lot of old rusty nails on it. We see a couple that might be square nails, but most of them are old round nails. It’s not perfect but then again, it is! It measures 27″ H x 17″ W x 7.75 D. It weighs 12 lbs. EARLY ANTIQUE BENTWOOD FOLK ART BRIDES BOX ORIGINAL HAND PAINTED GREEN FLORAL. Up for sale is this wonderful old bride’s box. It’s might be Scandinavian and it might be Swedish. We don’t know origin or age of this item but we’d guess that it’s from the 1800’s. It’s a wonderful size and is in great condition for its age. It has two little wood carved post catches that hold the lid in place. You push these catches out and it releases the lid. They hold the lid in place when the lid is on. The lid has a small thin wire handle to lift the lid off. On the lid, you can see the initials ARS stenciled in the lid on one side and KAS scribed by hand in the lid on the other end. On the underside of the lid, you can see some handwriting in pencil but we can’t read what it says. It appears some of it is another language but we are not sure. The color is a dark green painted color with black undertones. The flowers are a Primitive red with white and black accents. It’s very nice and well done in that folk art way we love! The box has wide, overlapping two-finger jointed band construction. The ends of the bands appear to have a stitched leather? Binding on them that goes through to the inside of the box. There are a couple of small square nails near the end of the bands. There are other, round and shiny nails around the base of the box that appear to be newer than the other nails but don’t detract from the appearance. The box measures 9.75″ L x 6″ W x 4 H. It has some fading, crackling paint, edgewear, divots in the surface, streaks, paint loss, wood missing here and there, streaks, paint loss, paint chips. The condition of this is exactly what you want to see in old true antiques!! Please look at the photos for a more accurate description and detail and ask lots of questions if needed. Offered here, a really great example of an American mid-19th century hand painted/decorated slide top box. THIS IS NOT A JACOB WEBER BOX. Lavishly hand painted/decorated on 5 sides, this box maintains its structural integrity including all of its original hand cut nails. I can find only one tiny later round head nail. This box measures 9 1/4 x 6 1/2 x 5 1/8. The design analog for the decoration on this box is probably the decorative work of Rufus M. Porter, a prolific wall muralist among many other things. Indeed this may be his work or the work of his shop. Porters work will suggest the design of this box. This box is constructed of clear straight grain pine. The inside is clean as is the bottom which may display the dual brush stroke of the particular painter who created it. As you can see from the photos there are losses to the paint in various places, made more visible by the exposure of the underlying white gesso. This box is in its original dry surface with no amendment or alteration that I can see. It does not look to me as if it were ever used for anything except sitting on a surface and being enjoyed for its scenery. Of course, it was found near New England.
