A real piece of Authentic African Art! This type of posters are highly collectible and many times displayed in Museums all over the world! With the arrival of video and video cassettes during 1980s In Ghana (West Africa) a small-scale film distribution / mobile Cinema was created. This small size mobile “Cinema” operators were equipped with a television a Video and sometimes with a small portable generator and were moving from town to town from village to village operating and showing their films! (During the day inside social clubs or houses and during the night in the open air). In order to attract more customers and in order to advertise their mission and business the need of huge posters was created and born. Talented artists after viewing the film were creating large size posters using oil paint on canvas (Because of unavailability and high cost of imported canvas , The artists were using used flour sacks sewn together). The artist had the freedom to add or change scenes seen or not seen in the film in order to make the poster more attractive (This is the reason that this hand painted posters are more interesting as ART than the normal posters since each of this hand painted poster is UNIQUE and except the film content it also express the artist himself). These posters were rolled or folded and easy to move around with the mobile Cinema. Because of the posters ” hard ” life (Folded or rolled, under the rain and sun and display for several months during their rounds all over Ghana) most of the surviving posters have damage at the end of the canvas, peelings, cracking and other damages. By the mid 1990s the mobile Cinema business declined and almost collapsed since television and video was more widely available in Ghana. The profits of the mobile Cinema operators were also reduced and they were not able to afford the “expensive” talented artists to paint their posters anymore. At the present days they have to rely with Photocopy paper posters in order to survive and reduce cost. Folk Art Whaling Whale seascape oil painting of Louis LeBreton litho signed
This fantastic antique whale hunting scene is an oil painting on wood. It is acopy of a famous lithograph done in 1853 by Louis Le Breton titled “Peche a la Baleine” Whaling near the Cape of Good Hope. It is s igned, by the artist with his logo. I can’t make out the exact lettering of it. The paint is thick, heavy, oil based paint on wood boards. Named after a Mohegan Sachem. Also there is a town today called Uncasville, CT. Several other Yankee whalers were named for local Native Americans of prominence including Awashonks, Metacom, and Massasoit. There are 2 whales actually in the scene. One in foreground, one in background right. Middle one you can see them lowering the dinghy boat with hunters in it to get closer to the whale. Seagulls in the air. Sailors are everywhere on each boat. American flag with 36 stars dates the flag to 1865. On the Man of War Pendant is the ships name’UNCAS’ shown backwards. The other flag I believe is Dunkirk France. Location might be in the Azores is a guess. ? It’s big and heavy and an amazing piece with excellent quality, perspective and detail. ANTIQUE multi DRAWER PRIMITIVE APOTHECARY with OLD GREEN Paint. FOLK ART
Early dovetailed wooden apothecary or spice chest with old Green paint. This chest measures aprox. 18″x9″x11 and is made of Pine. The drawers do stick a little but could probably be fixed easily enough by waxing or shaving a couple. This makes a beautiful display piece in an old Farmhouse style kitchen. 11 x 9 inches. Provenance: An important New York folk art collection. Overall the painting is in good original condition, very stable. It has probably never been cleaned and would brighten up if done so. There is a line of grime and decay at the frame line as pictured where dirt was allowed to accumulate. The exterior part of the frame is in fine original condition; the gilding and gesso on the interior filet has largely worn away. He began his career decorating antique New England furniture with his wife Martha Farham. In 1953 the New York socialite Joan Whitney.
