Antique Folk Art Oil Painting Late 1700's Early 1800's, Childrens Portrait, NICE
Up for sale is an outstanding antique oil painting depicting an outdoor portrait of two young children with their small Yorkshire Terrier by their side. This original folk art composition dates to the late 1700’s to early 1800’s and is in good condition for its age. This is a large and impressive painting with the canvas measuring approximately. 26.75 x 36 inches while the large gesso gold wood frame measures 31 x 43 inches. What makes this a most interesting painting is that the head of the boy, girl and entire dog were painted on a separate piece of canvas and then attached to the bodies. The background and bodies were pre painted by the artist and then when he received the commission would have to just paint the figures faces. The painting is in good condition for its age showing one small chip at the top of the girls head and craquelure across the surface. Their is also surface dirt darkening the painting which would benefit from a light cleaning brightening up the colors adding depth. Their is also some play in the canvas back and forth by no means severe. This wonderful early example is a phenomenal work of primitive art in a most unique style that is ready to hang in ones home or collection. The gesso wood frame has been repainted but is very attractive with just a small portion missing on in the top left. I can not guarantee that more gesso will not break off in transit, expect it, portions are loose and to safely packed this will almost ensure some more will remove. The image provided accurately represent the quality, condition and beauty of this original 200+ year old oil painting but if you have any additional questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing! Lawrence Lebduska The Garden of Eden(Wildlife) Naive Religious, Folk Art
Almost every artist I post for sales is in the top 1-3% for book mentions, museums that have their work, success in their style or era, and highest prices achieved. Lebduska is an interesting artist and I think the potential for his art exploding in value is possible, especially if there is a major museum retrospection which has helped many artists’ art prices and overall reputation get boosted. I remember years ago how Edward Hopper’s art went up many echelons as did Childe Hassam and other artists. I have been saving this one for quite a while. It was painted by one of the most inspirational artists that I have ever read about. I want you to research the amazing recovery that he made from the depths of despair about fifty years ago. Check Askart to see how many books he has been written about and the museums that have his art up to the year 2000, including the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, one great museum. The museums are throughout the United States, not particularly regional like many artists. His paintings in the 1930’s are credited with motivating Abby Rockefeller to amass her folk art collection. Lawrence Lebduska’s art style has been referred to as naive religious, folk, fantasy filled, symbolic, and bold in color. His animals, found in many of his paintings may be peaceful, playful or occasionally fearful or menacing. In this Garden of Eden painting(Wildlife) do you think that is a crown of thorns? If you investigate his art on Artvalue you will see why I think that. Is there a snake in that unique tree? I like it too much but it might need a home to be displayed. His “Cause of Struggle” is the best folk painting that I have ever seen. I rambled enough, read about one of America’s most amazing artists. This painting has a good sized image of 20″x22″ and is oil on canvas and signed, “Lebduska” in the lower right. I think his art might grow on you if you see more of his paintings. Many of the Haitian paintings that I have seen remind me of his art. It is framed, I never took digitals, and is in very good condition. If you are interested you will find it. It is in a safe, bubble wrapped environment. The item “Lawrence Lebduska The Garden of Eden(Wildlife) Naive Religious, Folk Art” is in sale since Friday, June 02, 2017. FOLK ART PAINTING FAMILY PICKING APPLES JEANNE DAVIES (Listed artist)
FOLK ART PAINTING – FAMILY PICKING APPLES – JEANNE DAVIES (Listed artist). Folk art painting by Jeanne Davies, American, B. 1936, Family Picking Apples. Signed:’Davies’ lower right. Frame is a maple-grained pine frame with wooden dole connectors on sides. 19-1/2″ (49.5 cm) H x 23-1/2″ (59.7 cm) W (sight); 24-1/2″ H x 28-1/2″ W w/frame. Jeanne Davies was born in Plainfield, New Jersey in 1936. She attended the Scotch Plains school system. After high school, she pursued that dream by attending the New York School of Visual Arts. She left school after a year, got married and moved around the country with her husband before settling in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. While raising her children, Jeanne painted on everything she could get her hands onwalls, canvas, velvet, glass, wood, furniture She painted game boards, theorems, and primitive portraits. This dealer bought all of Jeannes work which included landscapes in the various seasons, water scenes, Amish scenes, Apple Picking scenes/farm scenes, family portraits, children, a Noahs Ark, and all types of pictures with animals. When the relationship dissolved in 2003, Jeanne retired from painting. She dedicated time to her garden and her grandchildren. She painted pictures for family and friends. (Albert Webster Davies) She has no knowledge as to when, why, or how her pictures became attributed to someone other than herself. Now she knows that her work can be sometimes attributed to Albert Webster Davies or some people have been told that she is Grandma Davies. Her spirit broke as she became aware that she is in danger of never getting the recognition or credit for her talent. Her dream almost came true. Unfortunately the recognition was misplaced in some cases. Jeanne Davies is now out of retirement and painting again to try to get the name and credit back that she completely deserves. She deserves to be known. She is using her acrylic paints and her oil paints to continue to turn out lovely paintings in both mediums with the signature Davies on them. There are 2,000 and counting paintings of hers out there. Lets hope people now and in the future will learn that there was a painter named Jeanne Davies and they will see the work she so lovingly created. Written in 2007 by Gail Davies Speers, the artists daughter. The item “FOLK ART PAINTING FAMILY PICKING APPLES JEANNE DAVIES (Listed artist)” is in sale since Wednesday, May 24, 2017. Description ——- Wonderful and Rare, signed , SALVADOR CORONA folk art box painted box with his usual joyous landscape of colorful, active people in early 19th century dress, along with exotic birds, horses, assorted animals (bulls, donkeys, deer, etc), flowers/trees and Maximillion era Mexico architecture. Notice the playful central story of this box – a pair of bulls have escaped and are being chased by a man on horseback who is trying to lasso them. Meanwhile the bulls have chased a man up a tree, as other. Villagers run for their lives. Box is solid wood with a domed lid, split wire hinges, and a divided interior. Box is painted in oil-based pigments on a cream colored ground. Because of the (partial) paper sticker inside, this work can be dated pre-1950 (when Corona emigrated from Mexico to live in Tucson, Arizona). Corona is beloved for the murals he painted on buildings and interior walls throughout Tucson. He is a listed artist, famous in Mexico and the USA, and in 2010, the University of Arizona / Arizona State Museum held a solo exhibit devoted to his work. If you do a google search the phrase. Salvador Corona: Matador to Muralist Exhibit, there is an excellent, 2010, YouTube (less than 4 minute) video about him and this exhibit. This is an original Salvador Corona work. There were many imitators of Corona’s style of painting, but since this is a signed work, there is no doubt. (18951990) was a Mexican-American bullfighter and artist who created an iconic folk-art style of figure and pastoral painting on everyday objects. The style is characterized by colorful Mexican scenes on a white background. The style was emulated and copied becoming a ubiquitous to the southwest and broader towns tourist trade in the 1960s. Salvador Corona was born on his family’s ranch Hacienda Mideras in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Coronas family moved to Mexico City in 1903 when he was 8. He attended the New English College in Mexico and then crossed into a career in bull fighting, entering the ring for the first time in 1913. In 1919 in Guadalajara he was gored and turned to painting. He was given his first painting lessons by fellow bullfighter Jose Jimenez. His traditional self-developed folk art style images depicted pastoral colorful scenes of Maximilian era Mexico. Painted on white backgrounds. His work can be divided into three categories: a vice-regal era with European and Creole noblemen mixed with Indians; stylized landscapes of Patscuaro, Acapulco or the Canal of Santa Anita; and his iconographic Mexican Virgins painted in tones of blue, purple, and gold often encrusted with mother of pearl. Corona moved to Tucson in 1950. His studio and residence was located at 1701 East Speedway Boulevard, and then 902 North 4th Avenue overlooking Catalina Park. Tuscon, AZ and in Josiah Joesler designed Broadway Village. His work was owned by U. Approximately, 10″ x 3.5″ x 2.75. Shown with a pear, for scale. Mark — signed ” Corona ” inside lid, in paint.
