Gorgeous original folk art portrait, unsigned, oil on canvas circa 1850. Although unsigned I believe this to be the work of Folk artist Joseph Whiting Stock. His composition and details are the same as in this work. The use of the flooring as part of his composition, the angle and structure of the face also is like Stocks. The canvas measures 36X28 inches unframed. It appears that this was relined many many years ago. The condition is very good. Painting has been cleaned and varnished. Stock rarely signed his works. It shows a child holding a hat, I guarantee that this is a mid 19th century painting and not a later copy or repo.
