Bottom left corner and on reverse titled. Purple Irises Flowers dated. Image paper glued on board measures approx 8 1/8″ x 11″ gallery framed. Maud Lewis Biography (1903 – 1970). Born in South Ohio, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, Maud Lewis is renowned for her bright paintings of Maritime rural life. Having contracted polio, and suffering from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Lewis left school at the age of 14 and lived a confined but happy life at home. Following the death of her parents, Lewis moved to Marshalltown, Digby County, Nova Scotia to live with her aunt. It was there that she met her future husband, Everett Lewis, a fish peddler. They married in 1938 and moved into his small cabin. Due to her small stature and her arthritis, Maud was unable to do housework. However, she helped with the household by creating cards and paintings for income. With his encouragement, Lewis began to produce more paintings. Her work grew in popularity, and buyers began to come directly to her home to acquire her paintings. Despite her lack of formal training, Lewiss depictions of rural life, animals and landscapes, drawn from her everyday experiences, had an irresistible charm and vitality. She often used oil paints straight from the tube and rarely mixed her pigments, and her colourful work expressed the essence of Maritime life. Her work gained popularity to the point that she was featured in numerous newspapers, such as the Moncton Times, the Atlantic Advocate and the Star Weekly, and she also starred in a CBC-TV Telescope program in 1965. In 1967, her work was shown at the Centennial Exhibition of Primitive Art in New Brunswick at Beaverbrook House, St. Prominent collectors of her work include R. Stanfield, the former premier of Nova Scotia and Richard Nixon, the former President of the United States. Her paintings still hang in the White House and the Legislative Building of Nova Scotia. Lewis passed away at the Digby General Hospital at the age of 67 in 1970. She has become one of Canadas most well-known and endearing folk artists. The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia has a large collection of her paintings, and installed her original house in the gallery as part of a permanent exhibition of her work. In 2016, a film was released on her life entitled Maudie. Heffel’s Top Results. Rare Antique Folk Art Hand-Painted Large Stoneware Crock, Man and Woman
Rare Antique Folk Art Hand-Painted Large Stoneware Crock, Man and Woman. Fresh from a New England estate. Handpainted folk art of a man and woman standing. Old paint work with some flaking and touch ups. Look fantastic and old. The original crock glaze is showing through in some areas. There are a few minor chips around the rim/mouth. Please review the photos as I tried to capture it from all angles. Inside looks to be lead glazed (dark brown). Bottom shows marks where the potter cut the piece off the wheel with a loop of wire after it was formed. Imprinted with 2 on the back neck. No other makers marks. No structural issues or cracks. Measures nearly 12 tall. Base is 8 1/2 across. Mouth is 6 across (edge to edge). Please send me a message to start the return process. I respond to messages very quickly. Rare Folk Art Paint Decorated Pennsylvania Dovetailed Bible Box Circa1800 NR
This rare paint decorated, hand dovetailed, Bible box was made in Pennsylvania in the late 18th century. Constructed of pine with wrought iron strap hinges, it measures 18.25″ long, 13″ deep, and 6.5 tall. The salmon and red feather-grained paint is both colorful and well executed. The visible nails on the bottom appear to be hand wrought T-head shaped nails. Overall, the condition is very good for its age and use. There are two shrinkage separations on the lid due to drying over a 200 year period, and an old 2.5 triangular break-out caused by a trim nail (see photos). The paint has appropriate wear patterns but is especially colorful on the front. There is a 1 loss to the applied lower right base molding. The wrought iron strap hinges are excellent. Thanks for looking we USUALLY have around 500 antique , odd , unusual & collectible items listed in our….. For interesting glass , pottery , oil paintings , lamps , dolls toys advertising , china , primitives , vintage clothing , antiques…… From rare antiques to steampunk stuff. I will describe it to the best of my ability , but nearly every item i sell is from 50 to 100 years old and will show some sign of wear. It shows a lot of age and wear…… The lock may not be original , but it is quite old itself…… The hinges have been messed with and it appears to have been put together with small wooden dowels instead of nails……. There is original paint on the camel back lid…… On the front and both sides…… The back is unpainted as is the inside. A real primitive that may be even older than 1800…… It is what you say it is….. The front of the lid has old Germanic writing on the left side…… The letters on the right side are mostly worn away…… The paint on the top and front are fairly nice for the age…… The sides show more wear……. Still a wonderful primitive and with seriously old flowers and art painted on it some 200 years or more back….. To me it looks like maybe Gaudy Dutch…… It is likely NOT….. I seriously like this one…… For taking your time to search out this listing…….. My family and I appreciate how valuable TIME really is as we get older. For our OWN safety. Our MOM is often seen in the gallery photos showing the proportional size of some the items we have listed……. 93 , and is usually busy helping us. Instructions and MAILING STUFF. While we have recently closed our brick & mortar store…… We used to invite anyone to come and personally inspect any of our available items…… In fact they forbade us to list anything for a week as punishment for letting a member come here and look at an item we had listed……. We are sorry for this policy change….. But it is out of our hands….. A nice old primitive……. They can remain here , warm and dry………. Safe and sound till you can come for them…… Perhaps just too large…… Sometimes to fragile or delicate. Usually the post office and sometimes UPS…… It simply depends on where you live…… Thank you again for taking the time to visit this listing…. Best wishes and good luck in all of your searches….. I hope you liked our Gaudy hand painted and original stuff….. Remember that art pottery or porcelain make an interesting gift for a friends birthday….. Even a Halloween present…….. (well it is never to soon to shop for SOME holiday)…. I have more primitive….. Unusual & sometimes just weird things in my….. Tony , jon , mom, & nancy. Yunnow , 10 years ago……. A LOT more fun.
