This fantastic antique whale hunting scene is an oil painting on wood. It is acopy of a famous lithograph done in 1853 by Louis Le Breton titled “Peche a la Baleine” Whaling near the Cape of Good Hope. It is s igned, by the artist with his logo. I can’t make out the exact lettering of it. The paint is thick, heavy, oil based paint on wood boards. Named after a Mohegan Sachem. Also there is a town today called Uncasville, CT. Several other Yankee whalers were named for local Native Americans of prominence including Awashonks, Metacom, and Massasoit. There are 2 whales actually in the scene. One in foreground, one in background right. Middle one you can see them lowering the dinghy boat with hunters in it to get closer to the whale. Seagulls in the air. Sailors are everywhere on each boat. American flag with 36 stars dates the flag to 1865. On the Man of War Pendant is the ships name’UNCAS’ shown backwards. The other flag I believe is Dunkirk France. Location might be in the Azores is a guess. ? It’s big and heavy and an amazing piece with excellent quality, perspective and detail.
