Rare Folk Art Painting Albert Lujan Taos Pueblo New Mexico Early American
Fresh to the market is this fantastic original folk art painting by Taos New Mexico artist, Albert Lujan. This fine image includes 3 figures and is in great to excellent overall original condition (tiny pin points of paint loss and needs cleaning) — retaining its original folk art frame with only minor loss. Image measures 6 inches by 8 1/2 inches. Overall, measurements including frame are 9 3/4 by 12 3/4 inches. Albert Lujan specialized in painting the multi-storied buildings seen at his native Taos Pueblo, usually devoid of people and typically in miniature scale. Classically, these amazing views included a pueblo adobe house framed by beehive outdoor ovens, majestic mountains, beautiful New Mexico blue sky, and oftentimes, a ristra of chili. Was an early Taos painter. He was ahead of his time by painting with a style influence by Euro-American artists. In contrast, many of his classmates at THE STUDIO taught by Dorothy Dunn at the Santa Fe Indian School developed their own unique style of painting and continued to utilize what became known as the Flat Style of Native American painting. His work was shunned by collectors and the Museum of New Mexico Fine Art Gallery because it was too much like what other Taos and Santa Fe artists produced. Now he has come of age and his works are being sought by collectors and museums. In fact, an exhibit of some 40 works was recently displayed at the Harwood Museum of Art in Taos, New Mexico. The exhibit featured the works of Albert Lujan, Albert Looking Elk Martinez (also of Taos), and Juan Mirabal. These three artists all painted in what is known as the European style. There also is an excellent article on this trio of artists in New Mexico Magazine, January 2003. Recommended Reading: For a compelling and comprehensive overview of the life and artwork of Albert Lujan please see. Albert Lujan: Entrepreneurial Pueblo Painter of Tourist Art (1892 – 1948). This is an large incredible original painting in I believe watercolor and gouache not a print. It is titled lower left Blue Hills of Home – lower left and signed lower right 99 woody Jackson. On back has a label – inscribed w titled and his signature again and then dated October 1 , 2000 – for the Rogers Family – Theres no place like Home – signed again underneath that. This is such great piece of American Vermont folk art painting in great original shape w nice Birdseye frame and super bright colors. I do believe his paintings will be iconic American Vermont art. Just really and truly pops off the wall in person. Image measures approx 29 by 20 and the frame 37 by 30. This is the artist that Ben and Jerrys ice cream company uses for its advertising. Also here is a story I heard from an old Vermont auctioneer- he stated that he use to go visit the artist in his studio and always smelled the wacky tobacco and told the story that the stuff made him rich as he forgot to paint the eyes in the cows and boom he became famous cause of that. The auctioneer used to tell the story in front of the crowd whenever he had a woody Jackson piece and the place would laugh. Original Woody Jackson American Folk Art Vermont Painting Ben And Jerrys. IMPORTANT American Folk Art Painting Sunflowers & Church by Mary F. Whitfield
Mary Whitfield was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1947 when her mother was nineteen. Her father walked out on their wedding day so Mary spent the first years of her life in the home of her maternal grandparents. It was a loving environment with two aunts who each had eight children. The home was filled with family stories and traditions. Marys grandmother was an active soldier in the Civil Rights struggle. As a child, Mary developed a vivid imagination and loved to spend hours entertaining her younger sister and cousins, by telling stories that she illustrated with drawings. When Mary was seven, her mother remarried a man from New York and moved there with her sister. She and her sister would spend every summer in Alabama. In Great Neck, Mary and her sister were pioneers in integration, being the only black members of the student body. During the early years of her marriage, Mary began having the compulsion to create things after her children were put to bed. She would often find old plywood and housepaint in her garage and would paint paintings. This compulsion became a continuation of her love for storytelling that filled her lonely nights. Bringing to visual life a variety of stories became her escape from the sadness in her marriage. Over time, she found that creating art was a way of coping with her depression. Whitfield focuses her rich paintings on the historical and modern plight of African-Americans. The powerful works contain little detail; the figures have no facial features. Instead, the drama of their gestures or body language conveys the feeling of the painting. The paintings of Mary F. Whitfield are found in renowned the museums and private collections. The important American folk artist, Mary Whitfield, created this unusually large acrylic/watercolor on artist hewn wood board by special commission in 1989. Miss Whitfield has aptly titled the painting,’PRAISING THE LORD. Inscribed on the reverse of the painting by the artist herself is a particularly personal memento. To my dear Timothy who believes in me. He has given me such confidence, I cannot repay. All I know is that I love him and may the Lord God always be with him in his successes in life. Love always your friend Mary F. Beautifully framed in gold gilt the signed painting measures approximately 37 1/2 inches x 25 inches. Antique Early American Folk Art Portrait handsome Man Empire Picture Frame 1840
This nicely preserved historic oil on canvas portrait of a handsome, 20-something man check out the eyebrows! With pleasant, subtle smiling facial expression and tousled hair with near spit curls is housed in its original mahogany on pine frame retaining original varnish and measures 30 1/4″ x 26 1/8″ overall; 26″ x 22″ actual. The subject is depicted with his arm casually draped over the back of an empire side chair and engaging the viewer with the frankness and piercing dark brown eyes. The work has stable paint with some very small pinpoint spots of loss in the background and the surface of the painting is fairly dirty with no obvious inpaint. It has an early 20th century re-lining and is mounted to its original stretchers. I added the modern steel clips as the bent nails previously employed were loose and a potential threat to the canvas. It comes from a Massachusetts family collection and the identity of the sitter is unknown.
