This is a one of a kind original painting. Johnnie, an African American artist is incarcerated, has been painting about three years and is self taught. He has donated almost all of his paintings to support a program that allows men to earn their college degrees while behind bars. He has a rare eye disorder and is diagnosed as legally blind, but still manages to create beautiful works of art. This is called ” Second Line To Life” and depicts the proud tradition of the Second Line in New Orleans. It is done in oil, pastels and acrylic on canvas paper H16″ X W20″ is unframed (does not come with a frame) and is signed. There is a crease in the top left corner, see photo. It is on the border and does not affect the actual painting. Also there is a slight bit of damage to the bottom right corner of the border when the tape was pulled off. 60s Black African American Outsider Folk Art Oil Painting Clementine Hunter Styl

Depicts a black woman in skirt and hat sitting on a bench outside of a southern style red plantation house. A blue and white swirling sky can be seen done in Impasto above the house. To the right of the seated woman is a large tree and to the left of the house are attached buildings, most likely a stable and barn. Well done with nice use of color and thick paint. Medium is oil on canvas board done in a folk art/Outsider Art style; reminiscent of Clementine Hunter. No signature that I can note but I have not removed the piece from the frame to look for inscriptions or finger prints. Framed in its original mid century white and gold painted molded wood frame. Backed with brown paper and ready to hang. In Excellent overall condition. Clean, bright and vibrant with no scuffs scrapes damage or wear; very well preserved. Frame shows just gentle wear. Eye catching and appealing. Clementine Hunter (pronounced Clementeen) (late December 1886 or early January 1887 January 1, 1988) was a self-taught Black folk artist. From the Cane River. Who lived and worked on Melrose Plantation. Hunter was born into a Louisiana Creole. Family at Hidden Hill Plantation near Cloutierville. In Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. She started working as a farm laborer when young, and never learnt to read or write. In her fifties, she began to sell her paintings, which soon gained local and national attention for their complexity in depicting Black Southern life in the early twentieth century. Clementine Hunter produced an estimated 5,000 to 10,000 paintings in her lifetime. Hunter was granted an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts. Degree by Northwestern State University of Louisiana. In 1986, and she is the first African-American artist to have a solo exhibition at the present-day New Orleans Museum of Art. In 2013, director Robert Wilson. Presented a new opera about her, entitled. Zinnias: the Life of Clementine Hunter. At Montclair State University. Measures 9 x 12 and 13 7/8 x 10 7/8 with the frame. All fair offers considered! American Folkart Ship Portrait, 1850’s, original maple frame, Gouache, sign E. W

It was painted circa 1850 and is done in watercolor and gouache. This came to us in what appears to be the original maple frame. The painting measures 18 1/2X27 inches. It is initialed in the lower left corner as E. The overall painting is in good shape, there are two areas of toning which certainly came from the original wooden backing boards. This came to us framed, we have not taken it apart. The maple has a flaw in the bottom right corner but for its age the colors are still rich, a highly detailed work. The overall frame measures 21 1/2X29 1/2 inches. We guarantee that this is a genuine period painting and not a repro or modern depiction. This is an early 16 1/2 inch American Cloth doll with oil painted head. The seam runs down both sides and down the back of the head. The hair and facial features are very nicely painted. The body is cloth with separately stitched fingers. Painted areas show wear, but is all original. Dressed in her original hand stitched dress, apron and socks have been replaced.
