American Folk Art Oil Painted Rag Doll
AMERICAN FOLK ART OIL PAINTED RAG DOLL. Circa: 1900 – 1920. This doll is from a smoke free home and has no odors. I sure wish she could speak and tell you her life history. This cloth doll is 23 inches tall. She is an American Folk Art make-do oil painted rag doll. Painted face over litho rag doll. I would say that she was made in the early 1900’s. For being this old, she is in generally excellent condition. She has some cracking on top and back of her head. Sometime she lost an upper arm that has been replaced. Her facial painting is good. She wears a vintage dress/play suit (it buttons around her legs). She is an interesting very well done example. The chair and bear are not included. Like I said, I sure wish we knew her story. CONDITION: Overall good, the faux wood paper lithograph that is mounted on board has old dark paint touchups to scratches/loss (see side views photos 5/6), gold paint is nice, back has thin top layer of wood separation on side (photos 7/8). Note early Evangelical pieces are hard to find, this sign came from an old estate contents. SIZE 11 x 13 1/2″ (sight); 14 1/2 x 17″ (including frame). Quill and brush watercolor freehand. Large PA-type fraktur style presentation piece. Forceful and energetic with wonderful brilliant color. Very Decorative in fine period lemon gold frame. Ex estate of venerable Ohio auctioneer/collectors Tom and Carol Porter who had a great eye for interesting objects in as-found condition. CONDITION All in all, exceptionally clean as these things go. Examined and photographed outside frame. Only obvious problem is small tight tear on left side. Frame has repaired chips.
