This Tinsel or Reverse Foil Painting features Chysanthemums and other Flowers. Flowers, reverse painted on glass , with unpainted areas backed with colored metal foil for added depth and texture. The antique wooden frame has old paint, and is about 9.75″ x 12″ Old oxidized wood panel at the back (see the photos) Newer nails added to hold the wood panel backing securely in place. Not dated, but this folk art painting was made sometime in the second half of the 1800’s. This style, with surrounding area painted black, is typical of the 1850 to 1890 period when Tinsel Painting was a popular American Folk Art form. Paintings of this kind are rather fragile ; painted on glass with colored metal foil backing. About 125 to 160 Years Old. The painted glass and foil are in very good condition. No cracks in the glass. The antique painted frame has some age-related loss of paint. The applied wooden leaf at the bottom/right has some damage/loss at the corner.
