Measures 9 x 7.5 sight; 14.5 x 12 framed. Signed Welsh lower right. Artist self framed, nicks on the frame. Battle of the Monitor and Merrimack, also called Battle of Hampton Roads, (March 9, 1862), in the American Civil War, naval engagement at Hampton Roads, Virginia, a harbour at the mouth of the James River, notable as historys first duel between ironclad warships and the beginning of a new era of naval warfare. Paul Nickel (Welsh) was a New Jersey artist who constructed his work in the American Folk Art tradition. His inspiration came from old samplers. He laboriously painted, cut and applied canvas, and found objects, and self frames them. He signed the pieces “Welsh”. He took the tradition a step further with his incredible take on his subjects. He was in the Merchant Marine so many of his subjects are ships or sea related. He also drew from Americana for his subjects. He is widely and enthusiastically collected. Anyone who has been lucky enough to own one of his pieces usually comes back for more. Mr Nickel passed away in a car accident in 2006. Once in awhile you come across a very old and wonderful wall cabinet. The cupboard was found in Maine could be a New Hampshire piece and has spectacular features and a one of a kind look. The cabinet is from the late 1700’s and was adorned in the 1800’s with a very unique sponge painted pattern. The surface and patina are excellent. It is quite sturdy and well constructed.
