A 19th century technique used to give more depth to a painting by using velvet as the surface to which paint was applied. This technique was quite popular during the 19th century, particularly for painting “still life” representations of fruit and sometimes flowers. The technique was used throughout the early colonies, although not as frequently by the Penna. However, David Ellinger was an accomplished artist and teacher, who lived in Berks Co. And, being fascinated by the Penna. Dutch artistic representations on their hex signs, furniture and fraktur drawing…… Choose to recreate some of these designs in a more secular manner, and market to the new found collectors who were drawn to the bright colors and designs of these peoples.
