This is a wonderful example of Outsider Folk Art. This vintage Oil Painting features a Portrait Of an Old Man lighting a Cigarette. Awesome light source from the match creates very moody and expressive shadows on the mans face and the soft glow emanating from his hands peeks out between his fingers! Also there is a gentle glow from the windows behind the man that gives this painting depth and definition. The added texture of the paint is the icing on this cake! Signed but very difficult to read. Outsider artist Jimmy Lee Sudduth painting of automobile, 15 x 20, signed, but not dated. A less common subject than his more common houses and people. The painting is on plywood, as is usual with his work. There are several almost impressionistic dashes of red that really make the painting zing. The predominant color probably is his well known clay soil mixture. The piece probably does not need to be framed, as he provided his own border. Needless to say, Sudduth is represented in most of the leading books on American outsider art.
