Hopi Folk Art Mask by Gregory Lomayesva: hand-carved, hand-painted wood with feathers, hangs on a wall or sits on a flat surface. X 23 1/4 x 5 1/2. Gregory Lomayesva’s career began the old fashioned way with an idea and a pile of moxie. Dropping out of high school at the age of seventeen to pursue his art full-time, he landed his first job as a gallery assistant at one of Santa Fe’s prestigious showrooms. His cultural background now came into play. Of Hispanic ancestry on his mother’s side and Native American -Hopi- on his father’s side, Lomayesva began to reflect on his heritage and how it encircled him His introspection is evident in this fusion art. His woodworking pieces are bright and inventive and are a reflection of his own personal identification with and interpretation of his culture. The use of a particular image in a composition is a visual representation of a different feeling I’m having. It’s like emotional shorthand, says Gregory. He combines his love of historical western art themes and contemporary Indian art. Gregory has produced two albums of electronic pop music on his label Drip Records. He has also produced several short films. Large Wood Dragon Mask Mexican Folk Art Hand Carved/Painted Collectible Decor

Tall without horns- 10. Wide- 16 (Including horns). Wide- 8 1/2 (without horns). The mask were made by Jorge Sierra Morales. Jorge is from the Lake Pasquaro area, in the state of Michoacan. He began learning to make masks from his grandfather at the age of 8 and after 20 years Jorge has perfected his art. His work is based on traditional masks made of the copal tree. His masks are one of a kind. The horns are animal horns. You can add wall mounting hardware or just sit it on a piece of furniture. The mask is hand carved and hand painted with automotive paint. This makes the colors of the masks very bright. The mask has removable horns. Feel free to add glue to the horns to hold them in place. Refers to the making and use of masks for various traditional dances and ceremony in Mexico. Evidence of mask making in the country extends for thousands of years and was a well-established part of ritual life in Mexico when the Spanish arrived. Mask traditions have continued to evolve into new forms, depicting Mexicos history and newer forms of popular culture such as lucha libre. Most traditional masks are made of wood, with others made from leather, wax, cardboard, paper mache and other materials. Common depictions in masks include Europeans Spanish, French, hacienda owners, etc. , Afro-Mexicans old men and women, animals, and the fantastic/supernatural, especially demons/the Devil. Large Paul Kitchin Lynchburg, VA Folk Art Nautical Ship Oil Painting

Offered here is a large oil painting on a thin wood or fiber board by local Lynchburg, VA artist Paul Kitchin. It measures about 39 ½ x 27 and has some brown spots and wear around the edges. Information about the Artist from Retrospect Antiques. Paul was born and raised in England. While in England he was trained as a sign painter. Being both dyslexic and frightened of heights he looked for a new profession. The walls of his shop were bare so he decided to try to paint some pictures on them to help decorate the shop. After decorating his shop walls he became a full-time artist. He was featured in a program about his work by the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) and had several one man shows in England. His work was shown in “The Museum of Rural Life” in Glastonbury and Hambledon Gallery in Blandford Forum. After living in Los Angeles he moved to Chicago for a while and finally settled in Lynchburg, Virginia. Paul was pursuing his love of painting when he died in April 2002. The canvas is stretched over styrofoam and is attached to a wooden base. The head is carved wood. Old timers from the area have told us older canvas geese bodies were sometimes removed from wooden forms and stretched over styrofoam to reduce weight and make them last longer. Overall this mid 20th century Working Goose Decoy measures 24 long by 10 wide by 12 1/2. To the top of the head and weighs about 5 pounds. See all pictures for condition details. Beautiful and interesting hand-carved cat. My aunt had it for many, many years. It measures 14″ long, 7 ” tall, and 3 3/4 deep. In picture # 5 you can see clearly that there is a chip off the paint and then a crack. The crack that you see is a crack in the paint, but not a break in the cat itself. The cat has not been broken or glued. The paint is merely cracked from old age. It is a very beautiful and graceful shape. The colors are lovely and the eyes are mesmerizing.
