Very large Antique Hanging Decorative Wood Mask Face from Mexico. The vintage mask belonged to a lady who traveled throughout Mexico in the 60’s- 1970’s. This is a vintage wooden Mexican ceremonial dance mask. The mask was hand carved from one piece of wood and hand painted by hand. The colors are still vivid. The artisan carved a. Two lizards and an. With a mans head in its mouth. These masks and sculptures were used as part of traditional dance ceremonies used to pray for fertility, farming, and protection of the community, a tradition extending back thousands of years and a well-established part of ritual life in Mexico when the Spanish arrived. Performances typically took place on saints’ feast days, Carnival, and civic holidays, with dances, parades, and mock battles. Themes include Christians and Moors, Cortes and Spanish soldiers vs. Aztecs and other indigenous groups, priests, angels, devils, wild animals, mermaids, fishing, and agriculture. I will describe it to the best of my ability , but nearly every item i sell is from 50 to 100 years old and will show some sign of wear. Is for a very unusual bird carving…… Original leather strap , and a metal plate…. This was a duck decoy for a hunter to put in the lake…… It is marked on the bottom…… 23 inches tall and the head turns and has glass eyes…….. It measures about the same…. 23 inches from the tail to the chest……… 15 pounds before it is boxed. The body is made from a single log…… The neck and head are attached as shown…….. The paint is original…… It is a wonderful piece of folk or tramp art…… Many cracks and much wear….. But primitive fans will appreciate that. Huge Antique WEIRD CHILDREN Photo Tint PAINTING Portrait Primitive FOLK ART Vtg

I recently acquired it at an estate sale of a woman who was an antique dealer for many years. I’m certainly not an art expert, so I will attempt to describe it as well as I can, but please ask any questions you might have. The clothing appears to be painted, but I don’t see or feel any brush strokes on the faces. However, the faces do look painted, just no obvious brush strokes. The surface that the portrait is on doesn’t feel like canvas. It’s’hard’, but’bumpy’. The faces do look that’s what they could be. The clothing has some brush strokes, so they might also be hand tinted, then perhaps some paint was added. I just can’t tell for sure. The picture is huge, with a framed measurement of 34″ x 27 1/2″. The frame has a few scratches, but nothing significant. There is a signature at the bottom, but it’s so very faint that I can just barely make out that it’s a signature at all. I have no idea what it says, though. There are a few scratches near the bottom of the picture. This is just weird enough that it’s extremely cool! I mean, really, who wouldn’t want this hanging over the mantel. Guaranteed, this will be the focal point of any room, and its sure to be a conversation starter with any social group you are entertaining! Appears to be signed “Rossi”. The frame is marked on the back “Rieger’s Art Shop, Reading PA”. Condition: There is a small puncture on the building just above the door (please check photos).
