Her lyrical sculptures are similar to papier-mâché, but made without wire, and consist exclusively of newspaper and glue. Born Mary Onley and later renamed Mama-Girl by her grandmother, she came from generations of farm laborers and started working in the fields herself at the age of twelve. “I’ve picked tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, greens, peppers, ” Mama-Girl remembers. You name it, and I’ve done it all. Mama-Girl had to stop working outdoors because of severe allergies, which resulted in numerous hospitalizations. Episode, Mama-Girl reports being visited by a spirit, who instructed her to create art out of paper and other found objects-something she had never attempted before. A little more than twenty years later, Mama-Girl is one of the most celebrated folk artists on the East Coast. Her work has shown at craft shows across the Mid-Atlantic, and is a favorite of many folk art collectors, but she still credits every piece to the spirit who visits her in her studio each day: If the Spirit don’t give it to me, I can’t do it.

Offered this week is an Oil on Wood (I think Pine) with a twine rope stapled around it. It features a Blue Landscape. It is signed only “Bass 1981″. It is 11 inches tall by 7 inches wide by 1.5 inches deep. A second piece of rope has been stapled to the top as a hanging loop. This has been well cared for with no damage, except for where the 2 ends of twine meet on the top, the ends are starting to separate. BACKSTORY: In the early 1980’s my Dad operated an amusement arcade in a Weekend Market place called “Peddlers Village” in Wall Township, New Jersey. This strip mall was operated as weekend market only, to get around the “Blue Laws” that were in place in the 1970’s and 1980’s in parts of NJ. Because it was the only place open on weekends in the area, it was Very Busy, and attracted people from all over. He also happened to be African-American. I would judge him to be in his early 30’s at that time. He came in to the arcade one day, while my Dad was there, with this little painting. He asked if my Dad would be willing to trade a number of plays on the arcade games for it. It hung in my Parent’s house for over 30 years. Depicts a black woman in skirt and hat sitting on a bench outside of a southern style red plantation house. A blue and white swirling sky can be seen done in Impasto above the house. To the right of the seated woman is a large tree and to the left of the house are attached buildings, most likely a stable and barn. Well done with nice use of color and thick paint. Medium is oil on canvas board done in a folk art/Outsider Art style; reminiscent of Clementine Hunter. No signature that I can note but I have not removed the piece from the frame to look for inscriptions or finger prints. Framed in its original mid century white and gold painted molded wood frame. Backed with brown paper and ready to hang. In Excellent overall condition. Clean, bright and vibrant with no scuffs scrapes damage or wear; very well preserved. Frame shows just gentle wear. Eye catching and appealing. Clementine Hunter (pronounced Clementeen) (late December 1886 or early January 1887 January 1, 1988) was a self-taught Black folk artist. From the Cane River. Who lived and worked on Melrose Plantation. Hunter was born into a Louisiana Creole. Family at Hidden Hill Plantation near Cloutierville. In Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. She started working as a farm laborer when young, and never learnt to read or write. In her fifties, she began to sell her paintings, which soon gained local and national attention for their complexity in depicting Black Southern life in the early twentieth century. Clementine Hunter produced an estimated 5,000 to 10,000 paintings in her lifetime. Hunter was granted an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts. Degree by Northwestern State University of Louisiana. In 1986, and she is the first African-American artist to have a solo exhibition at the present-day New Orleans Museum of Art. In 2013, director Robert Wilson. Presented a new opera about her, entitled. Zinnias: the Life of Clementine Hunter. At Montclair State University. Measures 9 x 12 and 13 7/8 x 10 7/8 with the frame. All fair offers considered!
