That was the case when I saw this great 1850’s pine single wide board in the best Original Robin’s Egg Blue Paint! It became this Primitive Folk Art Whale Weathervane. All the materials are from the 1850’s — the Southern Heart Pine Wood with incredible patina. T he wood knot became his eye. This whale even has his teeth, made of old metal. It is a prominent stand-out on the wall of any room. The wood is a single wide board. He measures approximately 62″ x 15″. You can be assured that this piece was hand crafted by me from all old original materials. It is 100% American made with 100% American materials dating from the 1850’s. Large Old Antique American Primitive Carved Wood Painted Whale. Original paint: dark blue-ish grey, worn away in places. Beautifully hand carved from one piece of wood. The mouth is accentuated by a shallow cut in the wood on both sides. The tail is especially beautifully detailed. Very solid, with a metal insert that fits onto a sturdy stand original to the piece. Two pieces: wooden whale and metal stand. Acquired in Maine more than twenty years ago. Thought to be from the 1930’s. The whale measures: c. 30 1/2 inches long, c. 5 1/2 inches tall, c. Overall height of the whale plus stand: c. 18 1/2 inches tall. There is a c. 1/4 inch hole in the wood in the whale’s midsection on one side. On the top pf the whale’s back there is a c. 2 inch piece of wood missing, about 1/4 inch deep. Some cracks and age wear on the wood overall, but the piece is firm and intact. Item with be well-packed with bubblewrap and double-boxed if warranted. Antique tin whale oil lamp in overall green paint. Two red bands circle the burner top and bottom with a third on the stand near the base. Three yellow flowers alternate with black foliage in the saucer or basin and one flower remains intact on the burner. The paint is not original to the piece, but appears period. This fantastic antique whale hunting scene is an oil painting on wood. It is acopy of a famous lithograph done in 1853 by Louis Le Breton titled “Peche a la Baleine” Whaling near the Cape of Good Hope. It is s igned, by the artist with his logo. I can’t make out the exact lettering of it. The paint is thick, heavy, oil based paint on wood boards. Named after a Mohegan Sachem. Also there is a town today called Uncasville, CT. Several other Yankee whalers were named for local Native Americans of prominence including Awashonks, Metacom, and Massasoit. There are 2 whales actually in the scene. One in foreground, one in background right. Middle one you can see them lowering the dinghy boat with hunters in it to get closer to the whale. Seagulls in the air. Sailors are everywhere on each boat. American flag with 36 stars dates the flag to 1865. On the Man of War Pendant is the ships name’UNCAS’ shown backwards. The other flag I believe is Dunkirk France. Location might be in the Azores is a guess. ? It’s big and heavy and an amazing piece with excellent quality, perspective and detail. Jere nautical themed folk art piece. The whale is made of a heavy solid metal or lead. The board looks to be hand painted. Really a different style piece from the typical C. Jere works I’ve seen. Measurements 20″ tall x 14 1/8″ wide. It has a few small dings in the corners and some lighter wear from age. The green spacers were added to keep the whale from hitting the wood. Winner gets a spectacular, early folk art Americana watercolor and ink painting depicting a whaling scene. This is a very desirable subject, and very early. I would date the painting to the mid-late 1800’s. The painting is coming for sale fresh from a Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Estate. The frame measures 22.5″ x 14.5″, with the image measuring 20″ x 12″. The painting is in good, original condition, with staining around the left, right, and bottom edges, as seen magnified in picture 5. The painting is housed in a distressed, antique painted gold frame. In my opinion, it can be hanged as-is, but the winner may want to have it re-framed to cover some of the staining around the edges. What a piece of early American folk art!!! All my items have been stored in a smoke and pet free home in a temperature controlled environment since coming into my possession.
