Really nice miniature of a woman in mourning from 1854. W Murray was a portraitist and profilist who was active during the middle of the 19th century. Few examples of his work are known.

1848 Swedish Folk Art Mourning Dalmalning Kurbits Painting with coffin. Unusual rare 1848 Swedish folk art Dalmalning mourning painting for someone’s daughter. Features a rare painted coffin memorial. Hand painted paper it may have been a larger piece that was cut down to frame. Measures 15.75″ by 13″ framed. Note the angels in the upper corners. I bought this painting years ago at an estate sale of an outsider and folk art collector in Austin. He had some incredible pieces by some of the big names in outsider art including Mose Tolliver, Howard Finster, Jimmie Lee Sudduth etc. Most of the art was very colorful but this painting caught my eye because of its muted, moody tones. The person having the sale said it was supposed to be a ghost in a cemetery, and next to the figure there’s a representation of a weeping willow, a symbol of mourning. There’s also what appears to be tombstones on the rolling hills. Done in a naïve, primitive style, this painting emotes a somber and introspective feeling. The painting was done on a board, and has no markings except the name Peter on the back. I couldn’t find out who the artist was with only the first name to go on. SIZE: 24″ by 26″. This is an outstanding and dramatic folk art mourning watercolor painting in its original period gold leaf frame. Memorialized are members of of tne Dalrymple family of Massachussetts: Sally age 9 who died April 7, 1810 (of spotted fever I discovered); William age 30 who died Dec. 14, 1811 (while traveling to Quebec); Henry age 29 years who died May 22, 1814 (of bullet wounds while serving in the United States Army in the War of 1812); and Ann 27 years old who died Sept. 5, 1825 (of Dysentary). There is a note at the bottom of the painting indicating that the information was provided by Eliza Dalrymple their youngest sister – who became a teacher in Marlborough, Mass. I quickly found the historical information on the internet in the William L. Clements Library, University of Michigan. By the way, Henry was a cooper in Watertown, Mass. Framed under early glass, with its original wood backboard, this is a rare American Victorian era? Folk art memorial painting. It comes in its 12 x 16 wooden frame. It depicts a woman in distress over the death of Sarah Bennett. In the backround are weeping willow trees, as well as other mourners in the cemetery along with a cathedral in the back round. The white marble memorial is marked To The Memory of Sarah Bennett who died April 12-1837 aged 39. We did some research on the internet and found that Sarah Bennett (married to John Bennett) was born to John and Bethiah Clark on June 27, 1798. Sarah is buried in North Rochester Cemetery in Rochester Ma. There are foxing stains on the picture, and the backboard also shows a large foxing? There are old nails holding the backboard in place. The frame size is 12 X 16 and the print size is 9X 13. It looks like it is a watercolor, but this is speculation as I do not know anything about art.
