Original 1990’s Haitian Painting. Original Haitian art painting for collecting and home or office decoration. Signed: Prospere Pierre Louis (BIO below). Subject: Figures, Faces, voodoo. Style: Primitivism, OusiderArt “Saint-Soleil movement”. Featured in Candice Russell “masterpieces of Haitian art”. The Saint-Soleil Movement began in 1973, under the direction of the artist TIGA (Jean Claude Garoute). TIGA provided art supplies for the self-taught artists, many of whom were peasants living in an isolated community in the mountains above Port-au-Prince. Acrylic on Canvas – Stretched. Physical Condition: Very Good The Saint Soleil group disbanded after only a few years but five of the artists, Prosper, Levoy Exil, Denis Smith, Dieuseul Paul, and Louisiane Saint Fleurant reorganized into the group “Cinq Soleils”. After years of labor Prosper’s technique greatly evolved and he become a prominent and respected member of the local art community. His flourishing career came to an abrupt end when he died prematurely of an asthma attack in November 1997. À la suite de son voyage en 1975 en Haïti, qui sera aussi son dernier, André Malraux décide de consacrer un chapitre entier de son livre L’intemporel – la Métamorphose des Dieux édité chez Gallimard en 1976 au mouvement Saint Soleil. Évidemment l’ouvrage contribue de manière foudroyante à la reconnaissance mondiale de ces artistes perdus au milieu d’Haïti. Malraux illustre une pleine page de son livre avec une ouvre de Levoy Exil et ose même écrire page 330 Picasso voulait que ses tableaux du Palais des Papes atteignissent la liberté qu’atteint celui de Levoy Exil parce que le peintre haïtien ignore la peinture des autres. Mais ces tableaux d’Avignon sont manifestement des ouvres professionnelles du XXe siècle postérieures au cubisme, et dont la frénésie d’échapper à l’art appartient à celui-ci, alors que le peintre haïtien ne tente pas d’échapper à un englobant qu’il ignore. The sides are 3/4 inch thick and are painted with the Halloween scene wrapping around the edges so that a frame is not needed for hanging but recommended for this thickness of canvas. This painting depicts an old, historic, haunted mansion painted in the essence of a mansion from the St. Spooks lurking in the windows and yard. Trick or Treaters approaching, some hesitating. Fall foliage on the ground. Pumpkin buckets in hands and all under a full, Halloween Moon. Some Texture in the painting. High Quality Acrylic Paints Used. The backside of this canvas will also be Titled, signed with my full name, Lizzy Rainey, and dated 2018. This painting will also be sealed with a light clear varnish for protection. Painting Title: “Haunted Mansion Trick or Treat”. It seemed to work well. This fantastic antique whale hunting scene is an oil painting on wood. It is acopy of a famous lithograph done in 1853 by Louis Le Breton titled “Peche a la Baleine” Whaling near the Cape of Good Hope. It is s igned, by the artist with his logo. I can’t make out the exact lettering of it. The paint is thick, heavy, oil based paint on wood boards. Named after a Mohegan Sachem. Also there is a town today called Uncasville, CT. Several other Yankee whalers were named for local Native Americans of prominence including Awashonks, Metacom, and Massasoit. There are 2 whales actually in the scene. One in foreground, one in background right. Middle one you can see them lowering the dinghy boat with hunters in it to get closer to the whale. Seagulls in the air. Sailors are everywhere on each boat. American flag with 36 stars dates the flag to 1865. On the Man of War Pendant is the ships name’UNCAS’ shown backwards. The other flag I believe is Dunkirk France. Location might be in the Azores is a guess. ? It’s big and heavy and an amazing piece with excellent quality, perspective and detail.
