This is a wonderful late 19th century German Folk Art Toy Wooden Noah’s Ark in original paint with 22 carved and painted wood animals. The painted soft-wood ark measures approximately 11-1/8″ long and stands approximately 4-3/4″ high to the roof’s peak. The paint is original. The original cloth roof lid hinges are present, but detached, as shown in the photos. The ark shows wear, commensurate with age. It contains 22 small, carved and painted animals, including one bird. The carved wood animals show both wear and losses, most noticeably to the legs, commensurate with age. While unmarked, this form of flat-bottom ark with style of paint decoration is commonly attributed to a German origin from the latter part of the 19th century. This hard to find example in original paint would be a wonderful addition to any antique folk art collection, country antique collection, or antique toy collection.
