1968 Original Disney Folk Art Oil Painting by Flavia Weedn for Disneyland Resort

This is a beautiful and very rare original oil painting by the prolific and charming Santa Barbara folk artist Flavia Weedn. The painting is in flawless undamaged condition, the paint is vibrant and has no cracks or blemishes. This painting is ready to be displayed as soon as you receive it. This is an authentic one-of-a-kind original painting, created specifically to hang in the Disneyland Resort Hotel in Anaheim California, the only Disney theme park to be designed under direct supervision of Walt Disney himself in 1955 (Walt and Roy Disney were both fans and owners of her work). There are no known copies or prints of this painting to my knowledge, which makes this a truly unique piece of both Disney and folk art history. You will likely never see this piece anywhere else. It has the original artist’s sticker with the name and location of the resort on the back. It is signed and dated April 9th, 1968. Flavia Weedn was a well known folk-style artist who was most popular in the 60’s and 70’s, but was prolific throughout her life as an artist. She wrote over 75 books, created illustrations, paintings, even a stage play. As prolific as she was, her original pieces are hard to find and widely sought after. Her picture frames were custom made for each individual piece by her husband, Jack Weedn. This piece is no exception, his handiwork is clearly evident. Being nearly 50 years old, there are some small scrapes and fade spots on the frame, but it is otherwise in beautiful shape. Canvas measures: 11.5h x 9.5w Frame measures: 19h x 16w. Quebec collector, Kastel gallery. Maud Lewis Biography (1903 – 1970). Born in South Ohio, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, Maud Lewis is renowned for her bright paintings of Maritime rural life. Having contracted polio, and suffering from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Lewis left school at the age of 14 and lived a confined but happy life at home. Following the death of her parents, Lewis moved to Marshalltown, Digby County, Nova Scotia to live with her aunt. It was there that she met her future husband, Everett Lewis, a fish peddler. They married in 1938 and moved into his small cabin. Due to her small stature and her arthritis, Maud was unable to do housework. However, she helped with the household by creating cards and paintings for income. With his encouragement, Lewis began to produce more paintings. Her work grew in popularity, and buyers began to come directly to her home to acquire her paintings. Despite her lack of formal training, Lewiss depictions of rural life, animals and landscapes, drawn from her everyday experiences, had an irresistible charm and vitality. She often used oil paints straight from the tube and rarely mixed her pigments, and her colourful work expressed the essence of Maritime life. Her work gained popularity to the point that she was featured in numerous newspapers, such as the Moncton Times, the Atlantic Advocate and the Star Weekly, and she also starred in a CBC-TV Telescope program in 1965. In 1967, her work was shown at the Centennial Exhibition of Primitive Art in New Brunswick at Beaverbrook House, St. Prominent collectors of her work include R. Stanfield, the former premier of Nova Scotia and Richard Nixon, the former President of the United States. Her paintings still hang in the White House and the Legislative Building of Nova Scotia. Lewis passed away at the Digby General Hospital at the age of 67 in 1970. She has become one of Canadas most well-known and endearing folk artists. The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia has a large collection of her paintings, and installed her original house in the gallery as part of a permanent exhibition of her work. In 2016, a film was released on her life entitled Maudie. Heffel’s Top Results.
