Nice! Unusual folk art TRAMP ART picture frame CARVED FLOWERS Boston Primitive

This really is a sweet little frame, and since the photographer’s imprint on the portrait mount is “Karl Muller”, probably German. While it has the typical layering and edge-notching of tramp art, what distinguishes this frame are the carved flowers growing from pots that ascend the sides. Achieved by chip-carving and other gouge- and knife-work, these bas relief panels are folky and quirky, reminiscent of Pennsylvania Dutch craftsmanship. Rising from urns or pots at the bottom, tall leafy stalks terminate in six-petal compass-plotted blossoms. A zigzag design decorates the bottom center, and another, more arched, crests the top. There is a tiny splinter near the top of this element where a nail to attach a hanger poked through from the back; you don’t even notice this (but full disclosure). Consequently, there is a nail head on the reverse by which to hang it. I hope my pictures communicate just how delightful is this creation. Its outside size is 9 3/4″ x 6 1/4″, opening is 6 5/15″ x 3 3/4″. The portrayed is a beguiling wench wearing about 72 layers of clothes. I can furnish more pictures if need be. What are you looking for? I have enormous collections of tramp art, African masks and Panamanian San Blas Guna molas. [NEW] People have been asking what the back looks like, so I have added a picture (last one). It is covered with thick blue gray paper, glued down (so I can’t measure rabbet dimensions, probably 3/16″ – 1/4″ larger than sight size). The item “Nice! RARE antique TRAMP ART folk art curvilinear design picture frame UNUSUAL folky

This antique American tramp art picture frame takes a very unusual and folky shape, rather than using endless rows of rectangular pyramids as most often seen. The maker had a really fine sense of design! Instead of the typical diagonal notches in square-edged layers, these edges are beveled and grooved, creating a fluted effect. The old original shiny varnish is somewhat blistered, forming an attractive patina. There is a rare and perfectly intact carved wooden hanger at top. Although missing several tip pieces, it presents and displays very well, the losses long since oxidized to blend in. Be sure to look carefully at the pictures. The frame is 9 1/2″ x 8″ with a 5 1/2″ x 4″ opening. Main photo shows the truest colors. The carved wooden body slightly curved with 6 metal fins , two belly weights and brass tack eyes. The finish natural with an unusual green paint pattern. The decoy was found in the Finger lakes region of N. Age – ca 1930’s +. Condition – Very good with nice old surface , no apparent damage. The artist at some point in her life was employed by the man’s parents as a housekeeper which during that time period in America this was a fairly common form of employment. It looks to be a typical small town. When I walked into the game room as soon as I peered at the painting it captured my attention much like how most of us crane our necks as we drive by an accident on the highway. It is just hard not to look. The artist according to the man ended up in some kind of asylum or institution later in her life before she passed. This qualifies as one of the more unique pieces of art that I have brought home. Measures approx 45″ inches tall by 39″ inches wide including the framework, which is approx 3 inches wide. Crown and Anchor is a simple dice game, traditionally played for gambling purposes by sailors in the Royal Navy as well as those in the British merchant and fishing fleets. This is a the French version the crown has been replaced with a symbol of the sun, and is called Ancre, Pique, et Soleil (“Anchor, Spade, and Sun”). Circa 1870s in age. Simply made from a section of sail, and naively painted. The piece has been sympathetic mounted and framed. Please get in contact as that can be arranged. Toussaint was a Haitian artist who lived and worked in Jamaica, His work has been reviewed in the Jamaica Journal, Arts Jamaica and exhibited in the LSU Museum in Louisiana.
