Scandinavian small folk art painted dome topped chest / trunk dated 1880’s A wonderful small Norwegian kiste, or dome top blanket chest with a nicely decorated decoration on the front and dome topped with a beautiful comb paint surrounding the rest of the chest. Rosemaling (rose painting) designs and lettering. A lock is present as is the key which is a giant plus. The outer edge of this box has text painted in black. The early script is defining this as Norwegian…. If I’m incorrect please let me know. The piece is painted in the traditional manner of decorated items familiar to this era and regions. It has a natural interior with wonderful heavy ironwork hinges. Ironwork and peg construction can be seen in close-up photo. The dome top is decorated with a strong design consisting. The chest is 15 by 10 by 9.5 The overall condition of the piece is quite good and again, so very attractive. It is structurally very solid and well built. The top is still tightly attached and the hinges are holding strong. One decorative interior iron looks as the tip is broken off. The painted surface is in excellent condition although the piece has an early, old re-paint over the original by the owners descendants, and shows a light coat of shellacking and as a result protected the surface through the many years. My flash doesn’t due the piece justice. This box is as nice as they get. Very hard to find and you will wait a long time before you find another this appealing and with a working lock and key.
