Pair of reverse paintings – appear to be all original. Both ladies “portraits” are possibly from a die cut? Reverse painting of double hearts surround the lady on all four corners. Each in matching painted black frames. Backing is covered in wallpaper. Previous owner hung them up using thumbtacks. 5 x 6 inches. I have not removed either from their frames. Just dusted them off. 1800s Antique TINSEL PAINTING Reverse Glass Wood Frame Flowers Floral Folk Art

This Tinsel or Reverse Foil Painting features Chysanthemums and other Flowers. Flowers, reverse painted on glass , with unpainted areas backed with colored metal foil for added depth and texture. The antique wooden frame has old paint, and is about 9.75″ x 12″ Old oxidized wood panel at the back (see the photos) Newer nails added to hold the wood panel backing securely in place. Not dated, but this folk art painting was made sometime in the second half of the 1800’s. This style, with surrounding area painted black, is typical of the 1850 to 1890 period when Tinsel Painting was a popular American Folk Art form. Paintings of this kind are rather fragile ; painted on glass with colored metal foil backing. About 125 to 160 Years Old. The painted glass and foil are in very good condition. No cracks in the glass. The antique painted frame has some age-related loss of paint. The applied wooden leaf at the bottom/right has some damage/loss at the corner. (see the photos), br> A recent wire hanger has been added, so this antique tinsel painting can be hung as soon as you receive it. Tinsel paintings are folk art reverse paintings on glass with smooth or crumpled metallic foil applied behind translucent and transparent areas; when viewed in candlelight or gaslight, the effect was one of shimmering highlights. In the first half of the 19th century, tinsel painting was taught to young women whose parents were dedicated to providing refined education for their daughters and paid for such special classes. By the mid to late 19th century, the art had expanded outside the school curriculum, and instructions proliferated in books and were advertised in womens magazines. Its origins are related to forms developed in Renaissance Italy, 18th-century China and France, and 19th-century Austria, England, and Germany. Floral imagery predominates in tinsel paintings, as botanical copy prints and patterns were often employed. Especially desirable today are rare works that combine a variety of techniques and materials, including photography and collage.
