HUGE + MAGNIFICENT Mexican 19th Century Retablo Oval Painting Holy Trinity

We are very proud to offer an exceptional and rare original Mexican religious retablo painting. Oil on canvas, likely mid to late 1800’s. The quality of the workmanship if clearly a highly trained professional–not folk. Sublime shading / chiaroscuro technique. The paint is firm and stable. Of particular note is of course the unusual oval shape of this piece, contained in what appears to be its original frame–a heavy wooden piece with a very nice age-induced sheen. The paint appears to be largely original–95 percent or so. There are a few repairs (evident when you look at the photo of the verso) where gauze was applied in a few places and there was some touch-up work done. All of these appear to be quite old repairs and not uncommon for a piece of this vintage. Specifically, the areas above the three figures a patch of sky about 1.5 x 1.5 inches appears to have had subsequent paint applications, though these have aged as well. There are also a couple of tiny tears, which are visible on close inspection. These do not impact the main figures–two tiny holes on the top right above the figures and one on the lower left — within the edge of the robe of the figures. Otherwise ready to hang and sure to be a centerpiece for any serious collection of Mexican antiques, art and religious items. The piece is firmly within the frame (we had an expert framer secure it) with new hanging hardware–ready to display. This is an imposing 23 x 32 inches view area and, with the frame, a total of 31 x 40 inches. Thank you for looking. Please drop us a line if you have any questions. AAFA LARGE BLUE EARLY 1800s Folk Art Antique Shaker Oval Pantry Box Paint

1800s Large Shaker 4 finger oval bentwood pantry box in original blue paint. It is made of maple and pine with tack and peg construction. Condition: Box is the one of the oldest I’ve seen, as long ago, some of the wooden pegs were replaced by snip nails, and they have rusted out over the years as well leaving dark holes. There are splits/chips around. All that being said the box is solid as a rock, and very tight… The interior is clean and very smooth over many years of use. 11.5″ X 8″ X 5 Tall. What I think this is , is a Pennsylvania Dutch folk art primitive painted cedar brides box circa 18 th C But I really dont know. The painting is primitive. Bought at an estate sale in upstate NY. She looks like shes wearing a headdress but I dont think that type of headdress was worn by Eastern tribes? Would be really valuable if that were related to John Rolfe and Pocahontas on the lid. They have over 100,000 living descendants today, so could be. There is some old newspapers stuck to the bottom I didnt take it off in case it was a clue to origin. This oval portrait is in fair condition with a few small punctures to canvas and the gilt wood frame has losses to the gesso. The painting measures 21″ by 17″ and frame 27″ by 23″. Georgian Painted Silhouette Folk Art Oval Fruitwood Frame English Circa 1810

This original 19th century painted silhouette has a great charm to it. Its original oval frame, detailed bronzed profile and gentle antique colouring allow it to become a firm favourite that will blend with ease in to an existing silhouette or folk art grouping. Although unsigned we can date this silhouette to the 1790 to 1810 period by the fashion and in particular the cap that this older lady is wearing. This style of lace/ organdy cap was popular from the 1750’s until the end of the century. It has a very ornate double width pleated frill divided by a central ribboned band that secures at the nape of the neck. The puffed crown of this cap is made of fine sprigged lace netting or fine grade muslin. This type of cap was often referred to as a Dormeuse Cap. This older lady wears a small frill around her neck with draped handkerchief tucked in to her waistline. When examined under magnification you can see that our example is painted in black textured paint upon a plain paper. We have not examined this silhouette outside of the frame and so at this stage cannot tell if the paper is laid or wove. The old paper is clearly unbleached which you can tell from the gentle darkening with age. The female sitter has a vast amount of detail lavished up on her by the use of bronzing (the addition of gold highlights). This gilt embellishment really brings the sitter to life as light, shadow and intricate folds and pleats are all apparent on her headwear and clothing. Housed within a contemporary oval fruitwood frame with its original top hanger. Frame Size: 4 7/8″ (12.5 cm) by 4 2/8″ (11 cm). Visible silhouette 3.25″ (8.5 cm) by 2.75″ (7 cm). Condition: Good but not perfect. The paper ground has two historic watermarks, one feint one at 6 o’clock and a smaller but darker one at 4 o’clock. The original oval frame has an old and good repair at 12 o’clock -so, so common with oval frames. There is wear to the top outer edge where we suspect that a few old nibbles to the frame edge have been sanded smooth. The glass has probably been replaced at some point as the backing paper is not the original. This is a delightful George III era profile just waiting to become part of a new family grouping.
