Fabulous Antique New England Folk Art Diorama Sailing Ship Victorian Nautical

This one is on glass; the other is smaller and on board. This diorama is a wonderful piece of antique Folk Art, a survivor of an art form that is becoming quite rare. This fabulous piece is in an old, faded Victorian period frame and was created on glass. The piece is not behind glass, it is not a shadowbox, and it is currently a little dirty from years of storage. The sails are cream colored, showing discoloration and grime from age. The hull is painted black. The front sail is missing its mast and the front is missing the browsprit; the outlines of both can still be seen on the painting (with a few small areas of paint loss). The ocean is very choppy, dark green and blue with white caps. There are painted clouds in the sky and a few sea gulls. There are areas of paint loss in the background, as shown in the photos. This is not signed, as far as I can tell. I believe this easily dates to the last quarter of the 19th century, if not earlier. This piece is quite dirty. I gave it a very light cleaning but it would benefit and look much brighter with additional cleaning. The frame is also dirty and discolored with chips and bumps. The back has remnants of its old paper dust covering and the painting is currently backed with corrugated cardboard. The piece (including the frame) is 18″ h x 21″ w. This is an amazing piece that reflects the sea going industry which was and is such a big part of south eastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the islands. A genuine piece of Americana. Antique original 1800’s Folk Art nautical sea sail ship war oil painting on wood

Up for sale is a wonderful antique 19th century original nautical Folk Art nautical oil painting signed Avelle. It’s painted on a thick wooden board, signed by the artist on the bottom left, and done with rich color. It is a wonderful scene depicting several ships at battle while one burns. The piece is painted with a lovely stylized folk art approach with a lovely composition. It’s in nice condition and measures 20 3/4 inches by 11 3/4 inches framed. Large Paul Kitchin Lynchburg, VA Folk Art Nautical Ship Oil Painting

Offered here is a large oil painting on a thin wood or fiber board by local Lynchburg, VA artist Paul Kitchin. It measures about 39 ½ x 27 and has some brown spots and wear around the edges. Information about the Artist from Retrospect Antiques. Paul was born and raised in England. While in England he was trained as a sign painter. Being both dyslexic and frightened of heights he looked for a new profession. The walls of his shop were bare so he decided to try to paint some pictures on them to help decorate the shop. After decorating his shop walls he became a full-time artist. He was featured in a program about his work by the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) and had several one man shows in England. His work was shown in “The Museum of Rural Life” in Glastonbury and Hambledon Gallery in Blandford Forum. After living in Los Angeles he moved to Chicago for a while and finally settled in Lynchburg, Virginia. Paul was pursuing his love of painting when he died in April 2002. That was the case when I saw this great 1850’s pine single wide board in the best Original Robin’s Egg Blue Paint! It became this Primitive Folk Art Whale Weathervane. All the materials are from the 1850’s — the Southern Heart Pine Wood with incredible patina. T he wood knot became his eye. This whale even has his teeth, made of old metal. It is a prominent stand-out on the wall of any room. The wood is a single wide board. He measures approximately 62″ x 15″. You can be assured that this piece was hand crafted by me from all old original materials. It is 100% American made with 100% American materials dating from the 1850’s.
