The front of this antique dowry chest has been hand painted with a flower and other decorations, the date (1883). This wedding chest is still solid and sturdy, but in timeworn condition; there are old woodworm holes, traces of chipped and flaky paint, scuffs, scratches, paint loss, cracks, dings and dents. Mexican Folk Art Wood Dowry Chest Baul Box Colonial Furniture Painted Birds 17

This is a rare piece and a beautiful example of Mexican / Spanish colonial folk art. It is a hand-made, and hand-painted, barrel top chest (baul) from the state of Guerrero. The chest is intricately painted on all sides with stylized deer and birds and f. Bold colors and a rich waxed finish. There are no hinges or hardware. The arched top just sits on the base, but you can easily add a hinge if you want one. Overall the piece measures 13″ tall by 17″ wide and 12 deep. Both boxes are the same size. Olinala is famous for its production of fine chests (bauls), gourds and furniture, which are intricately painted. This piece too is from the Rio Balsas river region in Southern Guerrero, home to the Nahua Indians that paint these pieces in the same style as the amate bark paintings. Coffers and chests (bauls) were often intended as dowry chests used to store valuables. A fabulous capsule of colonial culture and indigenous folk art. Antique Danish 1725 Dowry Wedding Chest Trunk w Painted Folk Art 295 YEARS OLD

Recently brought over from Scandinavia. A Beautiful Example of a Danish Wedding Trunk Chest. Dated On the front 1725. Beautiful folk art painted motifs on the front panels. UNBELIEVABLE CONDITION for being 295 YEARS OLD! The trunk is covered in hand carved designs throughout. The Hardware has been repainted. The base of the trunk had been reinforced at each corner with triangle blocks. Iron strapping with heavy iron handles. The boards are super old and appears that newer nails were used in some places to secure them. Opens and closes perfectly. There is no key. The interior is in great condition with a side box and a small shelf located below the box. The trunk is super large and super heavy. There are some 4 2×4 blocks that were secured underneath the chest to solidify it before we bought it. It is very old and that keeps the Dovetail joints in place. H 40 with the base. Wo base 26 1/2. I absolutely love this antique, hand painted wedding chest! The trunk is probably made of solid pine wood, has two hinges and two iron handles. It has been painted in a deep and dark forest green color. This wedding chest is still solid and sturdy, but in timeworn condition; there are old woodworm holes, traces of chipped and flaky paint, scuffs, scratches, paint loss, cracks, dings and dents. On the front left side corner, there is a small piece of wood missing and the top of the chest has a large crack. A part of the original lock is still in place. This marriage chest is full of character and measures 33.1″ long x 15″ wide x 13 tall (84 cm x 38 cm x 33 cm). Antique French Dowry Chest Hand Painted Wedding Chest Folk Art Wedding Trunk

This is an antique French wedding chest, made of pinewood. This wedding trunk dates from the 19th century and is hand painted on all sides in a soft, spring green color (except for the back of the trunk, which has been repainted in the past, since it has a darker green color). The top of this French dowry chest features two painted floral wreaths with two initials in it (L & H) and the front and both short sides feature colorful, hand painted flower bouquets and floral designs. The bridal chest is in pretty good condition with wear, consistent with age and use; the originial lock is missing, the top of the chest has two large cracks and a chunk of wood missing, the paint has faded in some places, the bottom is a bit loose and there are traces of paint loss, splits, cracks, scuffs, chips, scratches, old woodworm holes (which have been treated) and general wear. It measures 24″ long x 12.2″ wide x 10.4 tall (61 cm x 31 cm x 26.5 cm). It appears that this is most likely some sort of reproduction. I’m guessing this only based on the hardware screws and the shape of the nail heads. However as you can see it’s a very lovely piece. Schrank, German Hand Painted 1700’s Antique Folk Art Dowry Armoire or Cabinet. An authentic “Schrank” or folk art armoire or closet was hand carved and painted in southern Germany during the 1700’s. A traditional dowry gift to a wedding couple, there are faint monograms “HS” inside a laurel wreath. The graining and delicate painting has had restorations over the centuries, and has been preserved with clear varnish. Hand crafted of pine with wooden pegs and hand hammered faceted nails, every surface has hand planing marks from a skilled country carpenter. There are shrinkage separations from age. The crown and feet were restored many years ago. The door has a wonderful hand wrought iron open lock and key that still work. Inside, the adjustable shelves on the left are later, right shelves are about 100 years old but not original. Measurements are 47 1/2″ wide, 26″ deep and 65 tall.
