Primitive feeling was typical of the 1950’s and is an excellent example of the work that began to come out of the Belgian Congo at that time. Each is signed by a different artist and come from the Nyange tribe in the Belgian Congo. In 1960, the Congo had declared independence and the half century European romance with the region was coming to a sudden close and being pro-colonialism or appearing to exploit their image carried new social implications.
