SALE PRICE This is a Fabulous Americana Folk Art Antique 19th Century Oil Painted Head Cloth Rag Girl Doll in Calico Dress 28 Inch. I have had a few of these Americana folk art painted head cloth rag dolls over the years and I always marvel at the beautiful rendering of the hand painted facial features, hair, hands, feet and eyes that give these gals such a distinct glow about them. This tall 28 inch doll was beautifully made from cotton muslin, and rag/cotton/something-crunchy stuffed. Her folk art hand painting continues to her neck and upper torso. She was treadle machine sewn and hand stitched. She has mitt hands with opposing thumb, well defined fingers and toes, a well proportioned body (one arm a little longer than the other), jointed at the hip, knee and shoulders so she can sit, and she has some aging, staining and wear to the fabric as you would expect of an antique cloth doll. The shoulders have some restitching/repair work. Her oil painted face and hair were hand painted and beautifully rendered. The whites of her eyes were never painted. There is some wear to the paint and three fabric splits (one to the left eye and two to the chin). Along with her blue eyes, she has a realistically painted nose, flesh color skin, delightfully smiling heart shaped mouth, bright rosy cheeks and a molded chin achieved through sewn darts. Her facial structure fabric was gathered around the top of the head, and dark blond brush-stroke painted curls define the hair. The pink and white print calico dress is not original that I know of, but fits her very well. It was treadle machine sewn the wrist cuffs have been pinned to fit the wrist better so that her hands can be viewed. She has no underthings, but wears a white lace trimmed dimity apron so that her waist and form are defined. I always marvel at the hand painting and like to think that artists or itinerant artists possibly painted the heads for these dolls. They look so much like portraiture of the period. She has blue eyes, red lips and an antique, blonde, mohair wig which has been sewn onto her head. Her dress is made of old red velvet and a gold/orange brushed cotton-which has the feel of flannel. I believe her dress and undergarments are original. A photo button has been sewn onto her dress. She wears an adorable pr. Of black leather antique shoes with red shoelaces and an old straw hat with a bow. She caries an old basket of flowers. She does not bend at the waist so she cannot sit-only stand. A lovely doll to add to your collection! Condition: This doll has paint rubs on her chin and forehead. She is slightly dirty and has stains on her face and neck. Her dress has a small hole on the front of her bodice. Her straw hat has wear and a small piece missing. There are no holes on her body and no odors. Stand is not included in this sale. Her face has been both drawn and painted on. Her hair is painted swirls. She has rosy cheeks, pink lips and the corners of her eyes have been colored pink, along with her nostrils. Her irises are a pale blue/grey. She has thick black lashes and a tiny dimple in her chin. Her head is big and round from the front, and somewhat flat from the sides (known as a’lollipop’ head doll). She has chubby hands with little nubby fingers. All her clothing has been sewn on, including her bonnet. She has a navy blue calico dress, and linen bloomers. Her shoes are oil cloth. She is quite solid and filled with straw (which you can see through her muslin body). The doll is jointed at the shoulders and hips and can sit. This doll has it all! A great folky, primitive look and a lovely addition to your collection! Condition: This doll is in very good condition for her age. Her socks have faded, there’s a small hole in the back of her bonnet and her bloomers are slightly dirty and have yellowed over the years. There are no holes in the doll. Add me to your favorites! HER LEGS BEND AT THE WAIST AND KNEE, HER ARMS BEND AT THE ELBOW & SHOULDER. HER FACE IS PAINTED BEAUTIFULLY WITH GREAT DETAIL. SHE WAS MADE VERY WELL & STITCHED TO PERFECTION. Her eyes are blue. Her cheeks and lips are pink and her hair is painted brown. She has individual fingers and large feet, a small waist and exaggerated large hips. This doll is stuffed with cotton, and wears a calico dress with tiny pink rosebuds. She has a beautiful presence. Probably from the late 1800’s. Condition: This is a well loved doll which has been played with! She has age discoloration throughout, repairs, holes on her hands, on the sides of her neck and a small hole on her nose. Her ankles have repairs that look like a child sewed them. Her dress has stains, holes, repairs, and the buttons have fallen off on the back her dress which is held together with a straight pin. The stitching at the top of one of her legs is coming loose. In spite of these flaws, she is still a great old doll! Add me to your favorites! Sorry, no international sales. She has a lovely flat hand painted face. She has stitched joined arms and legs along with a stitched knee joint. She has mitt hands with a separate thumb. Her body is firmly stuffed and has an aged patina with soiling as shown. She is clean smelling. She is dressed in a teal and white striped colonial style dress and bonnet, her petticoat and bloomers are hemmed with handmade lace. Her black boots are made of leather.
