This is a wonderful and extremely rare American Reconstruction Era Black Folk Art oil painting on canvas, depicting a little girl who resembles Topsy, and her small brother as they check the chimney for Santa Claus. Old, tattered stockings are hanging over a fireplace. The little girl holds a candle, while her frightened brother looks on from behind her back. Signed Kittie Thew on verso and dated December 1890, only 30+ years since the end of slavery. A Very Early example of African American folk art, and a really rare gem for any collector to own. Signed Thew in bottom left corner. Approximately 22 x 18 inches. This painting, which is both African-American Folk Art, and Christmas themed, is a Holy Grail for collectors of this subject. Primative or Folk Art Original Painting Molbak’s Christmas Garden Center

As a collector of primitive art, I have learned that I will never be able to afford a Grandma Moses or a Maud Lewis painting but that has not deterred me from collecting paintings by other artists who depict their kinds of themes. This painting is as charming as it gets. This is a large acrylic painting of a Garden Center in Washington in all its Christmas decoration regalia. The painting is on canvas on stretcherboards and measures 23″ by 29″. PLEASE check the photos for some of the details this artist captured. There is a pond and fountain scene, a decorated Christmas tree and stockings, the florist shop, Santa’s residence, a flowered gazebo, children playing and families shopping. You can stare at this painting all day and not catch all the finely executed details. Whimsical and colorful, this piece has it all. Artist’s name is N. Harvey (I think) who has signed the artwork at the bottom right. Probably dates to the early 70’s. A masterpiece of folk art to be sure. A moonlit winter scene with snow covered trees and a warmly lit cabin. Three bears out on a stroll. All under a bright, full Moon. Some Texture in the painting. High Quality Acrylic Paints Used. Born in Ohio, Kovener was a self-taught folk artist, a playwright, and a writer for the New Yorker Magazine. S he exhibited her work at the Musee d’Art Naif in France, the White House, and the Folk Art Gallery in Massachusetts. Her work has won numerous awards and has been reproduced by Hallmark Cards and Unicef. Her work is in the collection of the Akron Art Museum. This whimsical watercolor is signed lower right, measures 13″ x 9.75″ and is in good condition with toning of the paper. In an older frame and mat (mat is stained).
