This is a lovely c. 1870’s Folk Art oil on artist board of an antique farmhouse & barn surrounded by fields, woods & a mountain probably located in the Northeast – this clearly a fall scene as the trees near the farmhouse are showing their fall orange, red, & brown fall colors – also, to the left of the farmhouse is a field stacked with harvested hay – one also sees smoke pouring from the single stack chimney on the roof of the farmhouse – the painting was done in an impressionistic/Folk Art style, but, was capably rendered – the painting is in very good condition considering its age; & probably was professionally cleaned in the recent past – what makes this piece of antique artwork stand out is the incredible ornate gilded gesso on wood frame that surrounds the painting – it is really of a “frame within a frame” construction, & is in remarkable condition for its antique c. 1870’s age – the frame appears to have its original gilded paint on its surface & does not seem to have any gesso missing from the wooden framework – it really creates an interesting juxtaposition between the relative simplicity of the painting in relationship to the elaborateness of the gilded frame – the oil on board painting measures 14″ x 9″ sight size; & the gilded frame measures 23″ x 17″ – for its size, the painting & frame are quite heavy suggesting a very strong & thick hardwood base for the frame – the multiple layers of gesso also add to the weight of the artwork – the painting will be packed with a sturdy piece of cardboard over the front of the frame affixed with large rubber bands to protect the front of the frame & the painted surface of the artist board.
